Some tips for the unintitated below
Buy a first “11”. These are the players that normally cost the most.
What formation are you going to play? Most Managers choose 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. Usually you can get away with buying one or two cheap defenders. Last year was different with Liverpool and Manchester City full backs scoring points for assists and clean sheets. Some Managers are now going 5-4-1. Check who is going to play. Liverpool have no obvious understudy for Andy Robertson, he will play most if not all league games. TAA on the other hand has Joe Gomez to compete with. Always look at the promoted teams more closely. They tend to be better value. We like the look of McGinn of Villa, a winger available for £5.5m as an example. Promoted Norwich have good attacking full backs, so some cheap defenders from there may be useful. We like Max Aarons at £4.5m. Read up on injuries/late returns for players. With Aguero just back at City, a midfielder – Sterling is likely to play as a centre forward away to West Ham in GW1. Look at the set piece takers in each club. Palace’s Milivojevic is their penalty taker and a consistent point scorer as a result.
Goalkeepers: Buy one goalkeeper who will play every week (Ederson at City for example) and a cheap second keeper that plays as well. Pope from Burnley will play and is only ÂŁ4.5m. Sometimes goalkeepers in the lower ranked clubs are best as they rack up points making more saves. The aforementioned Pope was the prime example the season before last with 152 points.
Defenders: Look for teams that keep clean sheets. City and Liverpool led the way last year. Attacking full backs are normally the best, they can score goals, get assists. Mendy, Alonso, TAA, Robertson… Do any of the defenders take penalties, corners? TAA takes corners and some free kicks. More chances to score you points. Look at their Manager. Pep’s sides normally keep clean sheets but their players are priced accordingly.
Are their cheaper options? Is a player listed as a defender who is playing in midfield? They are more likely to score points – Fabian Delph listed as a defender, is likely to play in midfield for Everton. Most Fantasy Managers use 3 defenders, so make sure you buy ones’ playing regularly.
Midfielders: Attacking midfielders are the best. Chelsea’s Kante is a strong holding midfielder, but he won’t score many points. The bigger clubs rotate their stars more. Will Jesus start many games for Man. City? Look at the certainties to start – for example Salah at Liverpool. We look to buy 4 strong midfielders and have one cheap one as a squad player. Look for value, we see Ward Prowse at Southampton at £6m as a strong squad player. Ideally buy set piece specialists as discussed. Sigurdsson of Everton at £8m is one option, as is Ward Prowse indeed. Look for midfielders who may be coming back to form. Kevin de Bruyne from City is back to full fitness as an example.
Strikers: Kane is as close a “banker” as you can buy each season, last year he was priced very highly at £12.5m, this year £11m. He is however always a good choice for captain. Look to buy a striker who takes their team penalties if possible (see Kane above!). Look to buy someone who will always play like Rashford or Lacazette. harry-kane-spurs
Tips for picking your winning team!
Filter by “% of players picked” to see who the most popular picked players are. A good shortcut to identify point scoring players! You have two wildcards to play, one after the season starts and one in January, so you can change things around if needed. Avoid using the “Free Hit”, “Bench Boost” and “Triple Captain” tags until you have a double GW. These double GWs normally come towards the end of the season. Watch Match of the Day, best way of scouting new talent! You’ll see who is taking the corners, free kicks, playing well etc. Look at the run of fixtures the player has before buying them. For example, both City and Liverpool have a good run of starting fixtures. Will their players score many points as a result? Avoid relying solely on using the top point scorers drop down menu from last season. You won’t find your Kevin de Bruyne, Nathan Redmond or Oxlade Chamberlain using this method alone. Choose your captain carefully. Take into account the fixture they are playing and assess all your team before choosing your captain. Who is newly acquired this year? Value can be found in other players such as Perez of Leicester for £6.5m. He is a goalscorer who will now be guaranteed to start. The bonus is he is classified as a midfielder even though he plays as a striker.
Frantically goes to sell Aguero...

A top ten placing... Decent after week one. Wish to feck I'd bought Sterling or Salah.
What's the story with transfers in this thing?

You can make one free transfer a week. Any further transfers will cost you 4 points. If you wait a week and make no transfers you can make two free transfers the next week. But you can’t wait 3 weeks and get three free transfers, most free transfers you can get is 2.
Alternatively you can play your wildcard and make all the transfers you want for no point punishment. You get two wildcards a season.
You done well to get into top 10 without salah or sterling. I wouldn’t recommend playing without at least one of those 2. One of my golden rules is always own the highest scoring player in the game.
