Good listen. Still don’t understand what we were at, whole thing was a stain on the county

It is a good podcast that in general, probably the best gaa one out there. It was a messed up situation all round but SJ explained his reasoning for doing it well.

That was a really interesting interview. For many reasons. Seems McGeeney was not as integral in beginning the process as many of us thought. Johnston is very articulate about the whole thing and certainly his thoughts on McGeeney make it clear what a fabulous manager we had and lost

Wouldn't it be great if McGeeney was available after this year with Armagh? Like micko coming back.

Good podcast. Came across well and truthful. Jesus looking at that team from 2012 that hammered cavan. We are miles off those players in terms of quality.

Some talk about the “golden generation” that came through in the last 6/7 years, including All Ireland winners… They wouldn’t lace the boots of the lads on that team. None, apart from Donnellan would get into that team without a debate on the point. Certainly none of the defenders and in my opinion none of the forwards. A debate could be had on Feely.

The problem is with people labeling them the golden generation. Nonsense. Their egos and heads just become inflated and the hunger goes. It shows how far we are falling off that none of the players from our current crop would get on an average enough team from 10 years ago. On Seanie. A shame and debacle is all that can be said for that. Lining out for Coill Dubh for a few minutes sums it up really. It's not soccer and we shouldn't have been chasing players to come and play for us no matter if they improve the team or not.

Very honest interview. The "He didn't get what he thought he was going to get" line and when pushed on it he said "Well he thought he was getting a player" was something you wouldn't hear most lads say when questioned like this.

Those lads from that era didn't have egos and it showed on the pitch.
Also, you should listen to the podcast it's actually very good.

Easy to forget that 9 of the lads that were involved against Cavan that day were in the team that was beaten by 4 points by Wicklow in 2008. Maybe there’s hope for this group yet…

I disagree, I would argue we had a very good manager at the time. The players knew what they were doing. Never say die attitude. We were physical, fit. Again McGeeney had the confidence flowing. 10,000 Kildare fans made the trip that day too to support the team.

I remember when Emmet Bolton was an absolute liability of a corner back, a couple of years later he was one of the nest half backs in the country. The likes of James Kavanagh and Mikey Conway looked completely out of their depth in the Crofton (who to be fair blooded a lot of players but was not an inspirational figure to them) years too. Good management can give players the confidence to fulfil their potential, like Davy Burke did with the u20s and is doing with Roscommon.

The players have to have it in them to be willing to change/progress/learn…. The majority of these lads have had that opportunity under Cian O’Neill, Jack O’Connor and maybe they current set up isn’t great, they’ve had them too. That team from 2009 to 2014 give or take, had characters on it, as well as being good footballers. And ALL STARS!
McLoughlan, Mick Foley, Peter Kelly, Bolton, Morgan, Flano, Earley, Daryl Flynn, Paudie, Sweeney, Johnny, Jimmers, Eoin Fla, Smith…. All much, much better than what’s there now.
All fighters, all footballers. What’s there now?

Don't overestimate how good the team was from 09-14 either though.
Yes better than now obviously but really in terms of success not a lot to show for it.
