1. Christy Byrne.
2. Brian Lacey
3. Ronan Quinn
4. Ken Doyle
5. Morgan O'Flaherty (barely scrapes ahead of J Finn)
6. Glen Ryan
7. Anthony Rainbow
8. Nuxer Buckley
9. Dermot Earley
10. James Kavanagh
11. Declan Kerrigan
12. Eddie McCormack.
13. J Doyle
14. Martin Lynch

Great topic:

1 Christy Byrne - Shane McCormack
Christy wins this one hands down. Best shotstopper in the country on his day.

2 Brian Lacey - Peter Kelly
Kelly has had a superb first season but Lacey did a job on Jason Sherlock (x2), Tommy Dowd and the great Maurice Fitz in '98. Kelly still has a way to go to match that.

3 Ronan Quinn - Hugh McGrillen
Two very different players. I'm not sure Ronan Quinn would be as effective in the modern game but he was a rock in '98 and a huge loss in the final. Hughie is growing into the full-back role but he'd still probably prefer to be further out the field.

4 Ken Doyle - Andrew McLoughlin
Mac has had his best year in a Kildare shirt but Doyle was consistency personified for the guts of ten years. Showed his versatility when playing in the half-forwards in the semi-final against Kerry.

5 John Finn - Morgan O'Flaherty DRAW
Finn was very reliable and versatile. He always did an effective job when moved to full-back like in the final. Flats is probably the most underrated Kildare player on the current team. Rarely makes a mistake and is always consistently solid.

6 Glenn Ryan - Emmet Bolton
For all that Bolton had a great year after the Louth match, he's up against a legend here. No contest.

7 Anthony Rainbow - Brian Flanagan
Flanagan is an honest and reliable player but Rainbow was one of the best in the country back in the late nineties.

8 Willie McCreery - Daryl Flynn
Flynn has had a great season and can improve further in the future but I was always a massive fan of McCreery's. Horse of a man who covered every blade of grass and chipped in with vital scores.

9 Niall Buckley - Dermot Earley DRAW
Buckley on his day had few peers. Similarly Dermot, when full fit, could rightly claim to be the best midfielder in the land.

10 Eddie McCormack - James Kavanagh DRAW
Two very similar players. Both are blessed with an ability to kick great long range points but both were/are inconsistent. Jimmers does have time on his side to become a better player than Eddie though.

11 Declan Kerrigan - Paudie O'Neill
Kerrigan was as good a link-man as there was around during the nineties. Paudie probably possesses more power and scoring threat but Kerrigan was the more effective player on the forty.

12 Dermot Earley - Eoghan O'Flaherty
Two completely different players. O'Flaherty possesses more natural attacking talent but Dermot was a more effective player in '98 than Flats was this summer. His high-fielding was a big factor in Kildare's success - remember the catch for Murphy's goal v Meath

13 Martin Lynch - Johnny Doyle
Martin Lynch was always harshly treated by large sections of the Kildare support despite being one of our most gifted players. I remember Darren Fay saying once that he was easily the toughest opponent he ever marked. Johnny is up there with the greatest Kildare players I can recall though and I've no doubt he'd have at least one celtic cross in his back pocket had he been born ten years earlier.

14 Karl O'Dwyer - Alan Smith
Had Smithy replicated his '09 form this summer I'd have called this a draw but for obvious reasons, he didn't. It's easy to forget how effective Karl was back in '98. He took Barry O'Shea to the cleaners in the semi-final against his native county and he was Kildare's best forward in the final.

15 P√°draig Graven - √Čamonn Callaghan
Graven was a great free-taker with a sweet left peg but Leper offers so much more from general play.

1998 (10)
2010 (2)
3 Draws

The '98 team wins this hands down for me but most of the lads from this year's crop have time on their side. That '98 team was the culmination of 8-10 years work previously and most of them were a lot older in '98 than their counterparts are in 2010. If we were to do this topic again in 2-3 years time I suspect I'd be calling a lot of these match-ups differently (well at least I hope I would!)

Interesting topic but as things currently stand absolutely no contest, both JD and Dermot were on the panel in 1998, the two of them would walk onto any all time great Kildare 15, I would have Kavanagh on ahead of Eddie McCormick. Jimmers is more of a natural, Eddie would work his socks off but was prone to shoot blindly at times hitting a few hail mary's that either sailed over or went woefully wide.
I struggle to make any sort of case for the current backline, the 98 backline was both the rock and the driving force, as I said before Finn, Ryan and Rainbow were arguably the greatest half backline to grace the game over the last 20 year or so? , Darryl Flynn rapidly improving but he's not as naturally talented as say the likes of Nuxer and Dermot, actually he's quite similar to Willie McCreery, works hard and will row in with the odd important score.
Just one last thing a certain fledgling Padraig Brennan was used effectively as a sub on the 98 team and nobody can argue he was one of the most talented forwards to ever don the white jersey, just thought I'd give him a mention.

If I could pick my best fifteen from both teams I would jiggle positions about a bit and go with.

C Byrne

B Lacey
R Quinn
P Kelly

E Bolton
G Ryan
A Rainbow

D Earley
W McCreery

E McCormack
N Buckley
J Doyle

J Kavanagh
K O Dwyer
E Callaghan

KK has it pretty spot on. Well analysed. the only thing I'd change is Kavanagh instead of McCormack.

You cannot leave Ken Doyle or Martin Lynch off this team no matter where you put them. For my money Ken Doyle was the best corner back to ever come from this county and Martin Lynch was one of the most gifted. The 1998 players would currently dominate this argument but we will have a look again in two years time.

Id go with Kicking King for most of his picks although Id have Kavanagh instead of McCormack and I'd accomodate Martin Lynch by putting him in full forward instead of Karl O'Dwyer.

Another can of worms could be opened looking at this topic.

Dermot Earley or Niall Buckley in their prime?????

I think alot of the 98 team have now got somewhat legendary status in our minds as so successful over a number of years.

However, the current group have now been in to 2 Qfinals and one Semi and hopefully onward and upward. Alot are quiet young so may continue to develop. As someone said probably easier to compare the two in about 5 more years.

Either way the debate is only happening because we are successful again so long may that continue!!

midfieldmaestro

The logic is simple.

The 1998 team won two Leinsters ( silverware ) , played in an All-Ireland final and two All -Ireland semi-finals and beat Dublin twice.

The 2010 team have won no silverware , played in one All - Ireland semi-final and have never beaten Dublin. This team has a long way to go to match the 1998 team but hopefully they will.

I think the team this year have more natural footballers than 98 and they have also have better scoring forwards. I think if the likes JD Kavanagh & Eoghan Flats were around 98 they would be pushing hard for places But i have to say that the defense & midfield in 98 were savage I would put Morgan Flats in there ahead of Finn with him and Rainbow bombing up the wings and there accurate passing that team would post some big scores.

Hi Tomcruise, yeah I see your point and I had both of them in my first draft of twenty players and if things werent working out with the team I picked Martin Lynch, Ken Doyle, and a few others would be great options to have sitting on the bench, it would be a wonderful nightmare for any manager to have the pick of both squads.

Would it be a fair statement to say that if you took the back seven from 1998 and put them with the forward six and midfield of 2010 you would have won this years all ireland.
