- Former army chief Dermot Earley Snr passes away
Published Date: 23 June 2010 By Conor McHugh The former Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley has died. He passed away soon after noon today, Wednesday, June 23. The 62 year old had been ill for a number of months and stepped down from his position earlier this month.
On April 21, we reported that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal with honour in a private ceremony in the Curragh Camp.
The medal, which was presented by An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, was in recognition of "outstanding qualities of leadership, resource and devotion to duty as Chief of Staff in successfully commanding the Defence Forces for his period as Chief of Staff and for his distinguished service with the United Nations".
Lieutenant General Dermot Earley was born in 1948 in Roscommon and joined the Defence Forces as a cadet in 1965.
He had a distinguished military career including an appointment as Instructor at the Army School of Physical Culture (ASPC) in 1969 at the age of 21.
He was one of the first members of the Army Ranger Wing, as well as being desk officer for overseas and current operations in the Chief of Staff's Branch at Defence Forces Headquarters.
In 1991 he was appointed an instructor at the Command and Staff School of the Military College and in 1994/95 he was instrumental in establishing the United Nations Training School Ireland (UNTSI) in the Military College.
He commanded the 27 Infantry Battalion on the border with Northern Ireland. In 2001 he was promoted to Colonel and held the positions of Directors of Administration and Personnel before being selected for promotion to Brigadier General in December 2003.
He was promoted to Major General in Feb 2004 and was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff.
He served with UNTSO in the Middle East from 1975 to 1977 and with UNIFIL (Lebanon) in 1982/83.
From 1987 to 1991 he served as the Deputy Military Advisor to the Secretary General of the UN at UN Headquarters in New York.
He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies London (2001) and holds a Masters degree in peace and development studies from the University of Limerick in 1999.
Dermot Earley was also well known as a player and manager in Gaelic football.
He played for Roscommon for twenty years until 1985 and won five Connaught Senior medals, two All Star Awards, one National League medal and U21 All Ireland Medal from 1966, An All Ireland runners up Medal in 1980 and two Railway Cup Medals.
He is survived by his wife Mary and their six adult children. http://www.leinsterleader.ie/news/Former-army-chief-Dermot-Earley.6379489.jpThe above is on the Leader website. The reports from last night were obviously false as this says he died just after noon which would be right as I did a google news search at 11.30 and there was no news then. | |

| A true gentleman. His role in Kildare's success of the late '90s is often underestimated. He gave many of the '98 and '00 teams their inter-county debuts. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

| An absolute legend of our games and a true gentle man.
He has had a huge role in Kildare GAA since he first moved to Newbridge. He will be sadly missed within the Kildare GAA family.
Sympathies to his family and friends.
