They were going to slash his budgets even further. The players are going mad, they loved him even though they took a little while to get used to the notion that it was football and nothing else... Roli raised it again this year from what I'm told. I'd expect they might show up elsewhere.

Delighted for him. Great weekend with Kevins winning I'd say the party was good

Yeah great win over Neighbours Clane, no doubts boosted by just about managing to survive in Div 1.. Delighted for Noel Mooney too, real Gent of the Game.

Funny over the past couple of years we've had John Courtney with the Dubs, Cian O'Neill with Kerry, Niall Carew and R Sweeney with Sligo... Would be nice if with it was actually Kildare getting to a provincial or AI final some time!

He has to be among the leading candidates. Another good performance in Connacht final and I'd give to him in a heart beat tbh.

Can't agree. Firstly we give out about Ryan's interviews but remember Carew's while a selector here.

Secondly the biggest indictment of McGeeney's time and what may have been the heaviest straw was Seanie Johnston but take a closer look at the club/s at the centre of that and Carew's involvement there.

Thirdly, tonight was one win, albeit it against the odds. But before tonight Carew has been an intercounty manager for five games and never won once, including a qualifier with Carlow. You might say that was Waterford so what do you expect but their level was Division Four and in two seasons there were five wins in 14 games while never being in the promotion mix. Don't get me wrong, well done tonight but even that has an asterisk as it was a freak of a game. Roscommon were arrogant at the start and froze thereafter. They cleaned up midfield and Sligo never had a Plan B, but Carew was lucky Roscommon couldn't shoot. As I say, fair play, great result but lads looking at him right now like a lad looking at the bearded lady in a dimly lit nightclub after 15 pints. When Mayo win Connacht by about 30 points it'll be like waking up beside her the morning after.

To be fair to him he did about as well as could be expected with Waterford who probably have as little footballing heritage as any other county in the country apart from one win against Kerry in 1957. They only lost out to by a point away to Galway in the 2013 qualifiers and took Clare to a replay last year. Looking at their result today it's fair to say they've gone backwards since he left.

His team tonight looked well organised and highly motivated which is probably the height of most supporters expectations for the majority of county teams. It will be interesting to see if they can make further progress from here or if tonight was a one off.

It would be nice to have some viable native candidates for the Kildare job whenever it comes up next.

Yeah fair points Tommy, I'm measuring him against J Ryan's time in charge - which I know isn't saying much.

We definitely need to start cultivating internal managers - the external quick fix is old-hat tbh. We've had some good underage teams over the past five or six years but the management situation is still a disaster. Brendan Hackett, for example - is he even from Kildare?! If you were being particularly un-generous, Brian Murphy isn't either (I know that's harsh, just saying).

I mean, realistically - who would be the leading candidates next time out. Jim McGuinnesses and Eamonn Fitzmaurices are very thin on the ground unfortunately.

Incidentally, McGuinness's Irish Times columns are essential reading. Maybe not as good as The Supporter - that's irony, in case anyone's wondering - but his analysis of the game and team's preparation is brilliant.

His last article about why Mayo need to sort out their defence was fascinating. They put his argument to James Horan on Off The Ball during the week. Horan was like, "Well, every team doesn't have to go defensive..."

I was just face-palming, going - Mayo are gonna blow it again this year!

Ridiculous to even think of him as manager of Kildare after winning one game against a clearly over confident Roscommon. Lets at least see how his team perform against a top team like Mayo in a final before saying anymore.
From what I can remember he was not rated that highly outside the camp by Kildare supporters when with McGeeney. He also made a fool of himself with some comments about Donegal before our match with them in 2011 which clearly motivated Donegal.
And lets not forget his central role in bringing SJ to Kildare and the flak we received from every county as a result. That one worked out well for him didn't it!
Let him enjoy his win tonight and hope they give it a real go in the final.

I would have thought he'd be a contender given his coaching work with Kildare, particularly turning a toothless attack into one of the highest scoring in the country. Interestingly, the three-twos were back last night.

Also look at Waterford this year as another example of his influence - it's a case of mission accomplished by the county board down there but that's another day's work.

Again with the interviews. And again, people think that Carew went half-cocked off his own bat. You certainly should know better Tommy! It was calculated and I don't know how it's seen as foolish even... managers do it all the time. Heard James Horan only saying it last week - that's what they do now, try to get a message of some kind across, whether it's fact of disinformation. If the ref hadn't disallowed Tomás O'Connor's goal nobody in Kildare would have a bad thing to say about. McGuinness would have had his say alright, giving out about influencing the ref. It's just revisionist, hindsight-stuff, looking to read into every little thing. That game was lost not because of Carew's comments but because the officials got a massive decision wrong, Johnny Doyle was injured, Kevin Cassidy landed a Hail Mary and Kildare's hectic programme through the Qualifiers finally caught up with them.

And there was another message delivered by Carew before this game - "In their heads, Roscommon are way ahead of us." Remember, Sligo lost to London two years ago.

Carew is also even more of a disciplinarian than Geezer - he kicked Stephen Coen off the panel 10 days ago. That was risky but certainly the players seemed united and now they will know that no-one can step out of line (in the same way Wexford hurlers are in no doubt if someone like Jack Guiney can be jettisoned).

Yeah, the Johnston thing turned into a disaster but that's ancient history. Couldn't give a toss about the flak from other counties. Carew was as involved as everyone else, though Julie Davis was the initial contact. That should not be a factor at all.

That sounds like a party political broadcast and I don't mean it to be. Negativity wears me down. There are definitely two Kildare protagonists now and maybe three if you go O'Neill, Carew and Glenn Ryan. What isn't known is what interest, if any, either of them would have.

Sligo into the last 12 of the All Ireland on the back of 1 game is an absolute joke. Same situation with London a few years ago too. It's farcical.

Courtney is a Cork man . He was the Offaly manager post Magee in the 80s.  Enough said

Agree entirely. So is the fact they had to wait 11 weeks to play a game although in this instance, it appears to have been an advantage. The Championship structure is not fit for purpose because it is inequitable.

Here's one for you. Laois had played four Championship games by the time Sligo played their first. How is that an equal system?

I agree, Laois played 4 games and where out of the championships before Sligo had played any game, crazy.

Any system that has Laois out of the championship early has to be good surely..

But you're right and it seems to be acknowledged across the country that the current structure is a mess. The desire to preserve the Ulster Championship is the biggest obstacle to reform I think.

Jim McGuinness's proposal had some interesting ideas by tying together league performance (and to an extent Provincial) to the All Ireland but I think it created too long a season with too many meaningless provincial games (still) as most provincial winners will have already qualified for the last 16 via the league. Kildare would be playing in the B All Ireland if such a system came in next year interestingly.

I think the way to go it have a senior and intermediate system to many one sided games every weekend.
You cant go by league standings to sort out the weak counties from the strong counties there are two many teams dont really care about the league because as they always say we are preparing for the championship.

If it had relevance, every game would count, right up to the last one for finishing position.

Like that combination Ogie, Glen, Cian and Carew. Idea
