In relation to today being our first national title in 84 years, I seem to recall reading in some book or programme that we won a national football league division 2 title in the mid 60s or 70s. I can't seem to find a roll of honour for division 2 anywhere, which is not surprising given how dire the GAA records online are and given that there's only been an actual separate "competition" for the lower divisions some of the time.

Of course I might be just getting confused regarding the 1968 league when we were beaten by Down in the final.

Perhaps some of the oldies might be able to shed some light.

I don't think there were Div 2/3/4 finals until recently. For as far back as I remember the top two in each of the four divisions went into League Quarter-Finals. Was quite a good system IMO and I would like to see it brought back in.

There was definitely a period in the 1970s (and part of the 60s I think) during which there were finals for the separate divisions (see the Ulster Council Roll of Honour: EG Tyrone won Div 2 in 1973.

Fluting around with the league isn't something that's just been done in the last 15 years. They've been at it for donkey years!

According to KFM we beat Dublin in a Div II final in 1974. I stand corrected!

Still think the system that was in place during the 90s would be worth another go. We could have had four quarter finals this weekend with the four divisional winners at home - Cork v Wicklow, Tyrone v Wexford, Longford v Kildare, Fermanagh v Mayo. Two semi-finals next weekend and one league final the week after.

I knew I wasn't going crazy! cheers

Now that I know the year I can confirm it from this link: http://dublincitypubliclibraries.com/image/002-1974-team

....Dublin were defeated in the Division 2 final by Kildare.....

KFM (and RTE) were saying that it was the first national title since 1928 just after the game. Seems I can't have been the only one pointing out that something was won back then as the KFM website is now updated as well.
