Hey

I've started a new blog based trying to bring some stats to the world of GAA. Kildare haven't been out yet this year but below are some examples of what the blog is about

Whether you're better taking frees from the ground
http://dontfoul.wordpress.com/2012/06/16/frees-from-the-ground-or-the-hand/

Cork V kerry
http://dontfoul.wordpress.com/tag/cork/

Any queries, thoughts just let me know

Cheers

Hey congrats on getting the blog up and running. On first glance this looks like a very well thought out and relevant blog.

Can i ask where you have compiled the data from? Is it from attending the matches/viewing them on tv/dvd using newspapers stats etc?

Again congrats and all the best with it.

Looks interesting, well done. At least you've punctured the myth that taking it from the hand is always better. For that we should be eternally grateful.

Cheers

The stats are all based on charting games on the TV (3 this weekend!!) - thank God for Sky+

The Meath game will be the first Kildare one and I fully expect the Kildare forwards to be better than the perceived wisdom rates them.

If you want to know when new stuff is up I generally use twitter (@dontfoul) to let people know

Thanks again

Annual Leave & Olympics out of the way ... finally got round to the Cork V Kildare game.

It's not pretty reading ... Kildare may need to rethink having two free takers who (on this game only) contribute only 1 other shot.

Good work again.
Could it be that the three guys you mention as being shot-shy are merely more selective though? A wild shot from a high-risk position surely isn't a preferable scenario?

Possibly however you can be *too* selective as well. When three of your starting forward line only take 1 shot from play (and miss that shot) in a competitive half of a quarter final I think there's something up.

Now this is one game so we need to couch everything we say with that caveat but can you have 3 selective/shot shy forwards starting?

Oh and this isn't meant to be Kildare, or particular players, bashing.

They ran into an absolute machine in Cork in this game ...

Just a small point, we're not 'carrying' Mikey Conway and Eoghan O'Flaherty as free-takers. They are there for their playing ability and happen to take frees. Unfortunately both had a terrible day from dead balls and open play.

Great work on the stats, very clear and relevant. Re the frees its showing in black and white what we've all feared ie that we don't have reliable free takers, of course identifying a problem and solving it are two very different things. Any suggestions for a free taker that hasn't had his chance yet? Perhaps its worth going down the stats route in the club championship and finding the best free taker

Stats ehh, I love stats, Kildare top scorers.........

M Conway v Offaly 0-5, v Meath 0-3, v Cavan 1-04, v Limerick 0-3, v Cork 0-1 Total 1-16
J Doyle v Offaly 0-4, v Meath 0-1, v Cavan 0-1, v Limerick 0-2, v Cork 0-3 Total 0-11
E O'Flahery v Offaly 0-2, v Meath 0-0, v Cavan 0-8, v Limerick 0-1, v Cork 0-1 Total 0-12
A Smith v Offaly 0-1, v Meath 0-3, v Cavan 1-05, v Limerick 0-1, v Cork 0-04 Total 1-14

Hmm hows does J Doyle go from one of the leading scorers in the country in 2009, 2010 & 2011 to fourth place in the county for 2012

1-14 is great scoring from Smith considering they all came from play. (I think?)

It's a long time since Kildare were on the TV.

The Kerry game is up on the blog. Some terrible shooting from both teams but also it might surprise some as to how well, relatively speaking, Kildare did from kickouts

Don't you realise dontfoul that if a lad isn't making spectacular fetches out of the air that means the midfield is useless?! And don't you realise that midfield relates to two players only? Usually numbered 8 and 9?!

Hi

Its been a while but I did a piece on kickouts and the effectiveness of various types from the 2013 Championship. Some may find it of interest

Was looking at that on twitter the other night......interesting stats to come out of it for sure, most teams have some sort of game plan with kick outs but it all depends the game in hand and how your team are doing in that the game......imo you need a keeper who can adapt his kick outs from time to time in game situations as the arise and to be able to read the game and think on his feet when pressure comes his team to gain primary possession from kick outs.....

I wouldn't disagree with that - nothing more frustrating than watching a team do the same thing over and over again when it is blatantly not working
