| With the standard of player Kildare had they should have won that.
Writing has been on the wall since the friendlies.

| When was the last time we lost to Laois at any level? Feels like a while? Seniors haven’t lost to them since 2010. | |

| Yep. Better team won. The fact that Laois were decent and well prepared was no surprise. The fact that we were playing catch up in our preparations was no surprise after the development league performances. But to see the team performance fall off a cliff after half time was ridiculous. | |

| Not great that at all. First time as All Ireland Champions for 50 odd years and we last 1 game. | |

| Worrying. What is wrong with the mentality of our underage. We seem very brittle. We seem to have plenty of good underage players but a lot seem to be mentally weak or maybe I am being a bit harsh. | |

| Ah, it was just a flat performance and, quality wise, this group nowhere near level of 2013 U21s or last year’s U20s. Disappointing as we are literally only county in province who won’t cave pathetically to Dubs - they’ll walk it now - but it’s knockout so we just have to take our medicine. | |

| Probably harsh.
It was clear from the last 3 matches that the team wasn't a patch on last year. We were spoiled with a truly phenomenal underage team last year. Laois are decent underage also, gave us a scare last year.
Is James Burke a noted dual star? Maybe I'm out of the loop but seemed sudden enough to have one of our star hurlers playing midfield but maybe it slipped through my view the last few years.
Was the can't play underage if you get senior minutes rule still in effect this year? Silver lining could be having Early, Barrett, O'Neill available to actually get minutes rather than being panel numbers. IF we get passed Saturday!!

| Very lethargic Kildare side, never got going at all. Disappointing to lose to Laois on our home patch.
That's a decent Laois side who'll give the Dubs a run for their money. Only one starter from Portlaoise which surprised me.

| Not a huge surprise given results in pretournament. And we made 6 out of last 7 Leinster minor finals. This was the group 2 years ago that didn't. Hopefully a couple of them can still come through and make an impact at senior. | |

| In fairness James Burke was on the minor panel in 16 and 17 and joined the under 20s after the hurlers were finished this year. Given the paucity of options at midfield his inclusion wasn’t unexpected. I know David Kelly has had a lot on injury problems but he was fit enough to start for NUIG when they won the all-ireland freshers final a couple of months ago?
Like last year when we were only finalising a panel, our neighbouring counties had theirs in place since Christmas and were playing regular challenge matches. We got away with it last year just about and improved with every game. There are official rules about when under 20 panels are permitted to train (I think this year it was after 01 March) that we seem to be virtually the only ones abiding by. When you take into account hectic club activity in April and college exams in May, it’s the end of May before a manager gets full preparation with the players. Every other county has copped this and does a lot of work in the first 3 months of the year.
A lot of counties have upped their preparation for this competition while we’re hoping a round of pitch and putt 5 weeks before the championship will help bring the lads together. Think the county board have to take their share of responsibility for this. Also this idea of players being on the senior panel but not playing while playing for the 20's but training very little with them is a mess and doesn't work. Its going to crop up again next year in relation to Darragh Kirwin who was excellent.
Talent wise it wasn’t a great group but you could say this with the minors this year who faced a similar challenge on Friday. Colin Ward has a dogged group of players who have a sprinkling of talent with a lot of hard work. There are players who talent wise are good enough to start not starting because he knows he needs enough of workers to carry them through. Couldn’t say the same overall about this group last night.
Overall, things have dipped a bit at development squad level and rather than waiting for things to sink further you would like to see the county board going out and trying to get better coaches involved or get ex-players like Leper, Morgan Flats or Mick Foley involved. Foley has already had some success at schools level. Would like to see Ronan Joyce get the 20’s job next year given that you would imagine a fair few of that team will have come through Naas CBS.

| All good points Shergar. We need to keep it going at underage because that's what will turn the tide eventually at senior.
Would encourage everyone to get and support minors in Leinster final week after next. And just generally, to support our underage teams because it's absolutely vital.
Needs to be thorough review of U20 set-up this year, because we need to be competitive again next season.

| To me seemed a bit flat all year... was worried about a Laois ambush which happened.... still think a Kildare team obviously should be winning this game...…..
Just picking up on one thing and it is constantly coming up about ex players getting involved at underage i would hope and assume that like at most clubs a lot of these lads are being asked to get involved with underage and for whatever reasons are unable to commit...….
