| If he can get his kick-passing of the Sherrin right, everything else is working well. Get the disposal efficiency rate up and he's a great chance, even though Collingwood are one of the best clubs in the AFL. Best of luck to him | |

| Reports coming in of a serious assault on Paul Cribben over in Australia. He's been released from hospital but suffered a broken bone in his face and lost a couple of teeth. Very disheartening news. | |

| His president said he'd be brought in to remind him he wasn't on a night out in Dublin anymore, he was a professional sportsman and shouldn't be out on the lash at that hour. But all accounts are that he was just on the piss and minding his own business when he got battered. Amazing how the story is in every newspaper that covers AFL. They are just insane for their sport there. Love it. | |

| Why would his club publicly come out and say he "was under the influence of alcohol"..?
Should they not be protecting him publicly from hearsay and innuendo. By all means they can say it behind closed doors and discipline the guy there for breach of curfew, boozing or whatever.
Just find it strange why they feel the need to say he was under the influence especially if a police investigation is ongoing.

| Because there have been big issues over the last few years and a lot of public backlash about professional sportspeople going on the lash and getting into fights. Also, because in Australia, sport is at least as important as world famine. Also, because in Australia, everyone talks to the media, all these sports guys.
Anyway, the clubs are always accused of cover-ups etc if they don't 'come clean'. All they said is he was out on the town and under the influence. His parents were heading home so from what I can gather, they're not going to punish him in any way, the president just said they'd be reminding him he wasn't in Dublin i.e. he was now a professional and whatever about having a few drinks, walking the streets at 2am wasn't what a professional sportsman should be doing. They don't have the cover up culture we have. They're big into accountability now.
Poor Paul certainly looked uncomfortable being followed by cameramen on his way into training. He wasn't used to that in Johnstownbridge or going into Hawkfield.

| They're way more open about these things Sam and I think it's a better way, stops all the rumours and innuendo that would surround something like this in Ireland. I used to live in the centre of the city and while it's a great place it can be a bit dangerous around that time on a weekend night, there's the odd gang of lads going around looking for someone to fight and I'd well believe that's what happened. | |

Yeah you're probably right just pointing out that it's the same in that city centre and I'd say that's likely to be what happened. Hope he's all right anyway.

| Not very pleasant for the lad. However he has learned a valuable if not unsavory lesson in the fact that he is a professional sportsman now and will be the target of boozed up morons. Going out on the drink when you are getting paid to play a sport is never a good idea at the best of times, doing it when you are trying to make a career for yourself is naive.
I hope he had every success possible but he needs to realise he is not playing for JTB anymore.

Yeah, it is hard for people brought up in civilization to adapt to life in them places,,I agree with you on the most important issue that the lad is ok.

| A sizeable number of people on here need to take off the green tinted glasses, that happened to him here about 2 years ago while a county minor, its also a common enough outside a lot of the night clubs in our own county, you don't have to go to the other side of the world for thugs | |

| Didnt Stewart McKenzie Smith get knocked out cold on the main street of Naas (or Newbridge) one night by a total scum bag aswell. Its funny how people believe that Ireland is such a wonderful little island and frown at things that happen on far away shores.
Im sure we have all seen and heard of incidents far worse than this in our own locality. I also read yesterday that Cribben is to be diciplined by the club, why would this be? Is it for freaking a curfew or something else?

| It's for being out on the beer and in the city centre at 2am drunk. They're not going to nail him but as has already been said, that he's a professional sportsman and it's not good preparation or good for the image of his club and his sport. The same I'd say if any premiership soccer star was caught up in something like that. | |

| Nobody wants to see this sort of thing happen and I hope he recovers quickly. He is 19 and I suppose he was doing what 19 year olds do. But hopefully this will make him put his head down and concentrate on the amazing chance he has. | |
