Jesus guys were on here giving out stink when they tried to alter the kickout strategy this year - it's why Mark Donnellan was brought in. It didn't really work but I'd say they'd have stuck with it - because it would taken a while to develop anyway - except that Donnellan isn't in the same parish to Connolly under the high ball or as a shot-stopper. There are no other Cluxtons out there... it's like the O'Gara / Sexton debate in rugby in the old days, or Ward / Campbell in the older days. A combination would be perfect but you had to go for one's strengths while acknowledging the weaknesses. And anyway, even Cluxton isn't perfect and can be a bit iffy under the high ball.
I saw Jason Ryan give a presentation about kickouts, among other things, at the GAA coaching conference a few years ago. I'm sure he would have tried to address that situation this year as well. But like I said, you can only work with what you have.
And there is much more to midfield play in the modern game than plucking it out of the sky. In fact that wouldn't be at the top of the list anyway, that's for sure.
