James Horan & Cian O'Neill would be my first preference together.

Tony McEntee would be on the list.

Who knows who else may become available before years end? Malachy O Rourke maybe

Jesus it really is an indictment of the Kildare county board that in 2015 we are still looking for outside managers. Anyway, that's another day's work.

Other people might be more familiar with the situation than me - but realistically, could the likes of McEntee or Horan take the job with the distances involved. Would Cian O'Neill want to depart a Kerry set-up where they'll be regular AI contenders over the next few years? Glen is a total legend as a player as a man but personally I don't think he has the tactical wherewithal. Although maybe a legends package with Earley, Ryan, Rainbow might reinvigorate the scene.

It is bizarre there's a Kildare managerial involvement in all the finals bar Ulster. But I suppose realistically it's a small enough field...

Think Tony is over Brigid's in Blanchardstown so don't think it'd be that much of a hike from Cross, even if training was moved to north of the county. Probably the most realistic but comes down to finances. I don't think we're as bad a proposition as the weekend suggested as whoever takes up has a decent panel, is starting out in a league against inferior opposition, expectations are low, underage is going well and players are likely to return given Irish records in Australia and what not. Think he's the most likely and would be a great coup. Horan is flat out work-wise with Coca Cola in the west to be getting into it at that distance, Cian may not want to leave Kerry, Glenn may have missed the boat (for me he has). After that Kevin McStay another option.

A lot of people on here talking about Glenn's lack of tactical awareness. But where is the evidence for this claim? He seems to have done pretty well with any team he's been involved with previously and I think he'd have a better understanding of the club scene in kildare than most of those other names mentioned.

Not forgetting the man is an absolute kildare legend. That's why he's the obvious choice for me.

Can you expand on this?

I really don't understand the lack of confidence towards Glenn as a manager on here. He was in charge of the U21s for one year, he won a Leinster title and got to an All Ireland final. He done reasonably well with a limited Longford side. People seem to have this perception that he is some sort of dinosaur who will have the Kildare lads doing 40 laps at training á la Micko. He would certainly command huge respect from the players much the same as McGeeney did.

Also, would people want Kevin McStay in charge if he wasn't on The Sunday Game?

Never understood the antipathy towards Glen either. He did really well with an U21 side that was a lot inferior to the one McGeeney had in 2013. Only JD and Dermot can be compared to him as a Kildare player in my opinion.

Glen obviously is one of the greatest Kildare players ever and indeed I would rank him as one of the greatest players I have seen, full stop. I remember seeing an interview with Tommy Dowd, who bridged the gap between Sean Boylan's two great Meath sides, where he was asked which player would he'd most like to play with. His answer: "Glen Ryan". He would be centre-back in my all-time best fifteen, no question.

Now, I'm going to put my objective, critical cap on here, so don't everyone jump down my throat. I was not impressed by Glen's last season in charge of Longford. I might be wrong about this, but I don't think they won a single game? I know they were in Div 2, but Longford have some good players and a decent track record at underage. I don't think winning a few games and surviving was an unrealistic goal. From a tactical viewpoint, he is too open for my tastes.

Forget about trying to gain ground on Dublin - the whole country is trying to figure that out - but I think we'd still be vulnerable to the kind of collapse we saw against Meath last year. I think we'd still be as erratic as we have been under Ryan (I can sense the backlash building to this post) and I don't think we'd have the consistency we need to progress. That is my dispassionate, clinical appraisal.

Re McStay, winning the club AI was a brilliant achievement and the fact he didn't get the Mayo job is a genuine disgrace. It might just have been the difference between Mayo finally landing the AI and they'd nearly deserve it. But his folksy persona and analysis on The Sunday Game really grate with me and he's just not my cup of tea. Personal taste maybe but there you go.

Social media is abuzz with rumours that the Kildare county board are about to unveil me as manager, with Tommy Keegan and Crofter as selectors, and Freddy Kreuger as performance and lifestyle coach.

This from Eugene McGee's column on the shock announcement: "Haunted Graffiti has no achievements to his name except a string of incoherent forum posts and a pathological obsession with Jason Ryan. His back room team, meanwhile, are clearly mercenaries in it purely for the massive expense packages. The fact that James O'Donoghue, Michael Murphy and Cillian O'Connor have all requested transfers to Castlemitchell in the past 24 hours raises further uncomfortable questions about the legitimacy of this whole venture."

Joe Brolly has also tweeted that the new Kildare management team are "a bigger threat to European stability than the Greek financial crisis."

Lads, Tony McEntee hasnt got a Brigids team littered with inter county players past the quarter final in the last 3 years?? Success with a team like Crossmaglen cant be completely attributed to the influence of a manager, looks like this fella is being found out in a more competitive environment.

A lot of that Armagh 2002 squad have fancied themselves as managerial messiahs...not many have delivered yet it would appear.

McEntee has a pedigree in fairness. The question is the budget though. These guys - McEntee, Horan, O'Neill are accustomed to massive budgets for preparation, foreign training camps, the science to the max stuff. Kildare can't afford that, having their lowest budget for the guts of a decade. Unless they're willing to do what McGeeney did, and McGuinness did at Donegal, which is source so much of their own funding, they won't be interested.

That is a fault of the board of course. The failure to spark any corporate investment (getting a professional to do it) has been awful.

What is attractive is the underage structure which is producing players.

Personally I think there needs to be a much longer plan put in place on managers as well as structures. Whoever Jason Ryan their successor should be u21 or minor manager and next in line should be involved at under age. This puts a certain degree of pressure on the manager to perform and keeps them on their toes which would be no bad thing.

One of our big problems is that we are not using ex-county players as much as we should. Getting them involved at underage with the possibility of becoming Kildare manager down the line might be of help.

I also think that the managers from senior to underage need to be involved in the whole structures of both Football and Hurling for both men and women in the county. I think the parents of every child in the county should get a letter or some form of contact from their local club inviting them to join when the turn 5 or at the start of the training year. It shouldn't matter if they are male, female, black, white, Irish, Polish or moved down from Dublin, once they live in Kildare they should be invited to play.

Their parents and every school teacher should be offered a coaching course with no pressure to be involved with a club merely as something that may be of help when playing with your child at home or school. If they have done some sort of course they are more likely to get involved. You are not going to get everyone but every little is a help.

I know we have improved underage structures in recent years that have done great work and this is not getting at them at all, I just think there is a danger of us staying stagnant here instead of pushing to bring it to the next level.

Also I think getting county coaches/senior players/ex senior players to go into schools and take an odd training session would be of huge benefit.

Cian O'Neill as the next gaffer, with JD, Dermot and Rainbow (one forward, one midfielder and one defender, all of whom are Kildare stalwarts, All Stars and automatically commanding of respect) as his trusty lieutenants! Maybe even someone like Sos (not necessarily him but someone of his ilk) to come on board as a more experienced figure in the set-up?

It's going to be a huge appointment for the CB, in that they can't afford to get it wrong given how low the stock has fallen of this team in the past two years...but that being said, there is talent there if everyone can pull in the same direction.

But please, don't let them (CB) grab one of the journeymen managers who continue to do the circuit year after year. McGeeney was a left-field appointment and that didn't turn out too bad...hopefully this CB don't shy away from such an appointment just because it would be different from the norm.

Kieran is maybe not the great Messiah that the Armagh Folk thought He might be.. and seemingly with a very large Budget at His disposal too.

John Evans is considering His future after losing to the mighty Fermanagh.. just goes to show that Managers have some tough Job, and after bringing the Rossies from Div 3 to Div 1 in 2 Years.

The league to most teams means feck all its a place where you try and blood players coming through to try a get some sort of a system in place for the championship.
Where would Roscommom rather be still in the championship or Div 3 in the league?

Don't think it's as simple as that. The two go hand in hand. Only Div one teams get the preparation needed for a crack at the All Ireland. Being in Div 3 means you have no chance. So personally to build a competitive team Div 1 is a must. If it meant Kildare were in Div 1 building a team to compete I'd rather that than a couple of Championship wins but never progressing or having a real chance.
Of course you would like both but you have to walk before you can run. A good league position usually comes before a good Championship. Roscommon will benefit a lot more than us next year.

There was a common belief by many during McGeeney's reign that Div 2 suited us better in that it allowed him to try different players and game plans without the fear of been hammered out the gate. Division 3 is certainly not ideal next year but if it means we can give 4/5 of the younger players good game time then all will not have been lost. We're not a Div 3 team and I think we'll bounce back up. Reality is that we are not a Division 1 team at present but don't see any reasons why we can't be back there in 2 years time with the right man at the helm
