| Most Kildare supporters of my age around the mid thirties would follow Glenn Ryan through thick and thin and then go again. He was a hero to most of us but is he then right man now, a question that should be debated. We are at a serious crossroads here. We either pull the finger out and get it right and not just go for the populous choice or we could end up in a decade long downer and a host of promising players go to waste.
If Glenn gets the job, as said, his back room team will be the most important decision he will make and one of the most important for Kildare GAA as a whole since the McGeeney debacle . He needs people who can get things like the defence set up right and someone who can coach the tackle or dispossession an area we have been deficient in since Grimley left.
I'll be 100% behind Glenn no question of that, but if it goes wrong I'd hate his reputation to be harmed, because the younger generation would never have seen him play in the flesh, even the younger players coming through would associate with John Doyle a lot more than Glenn Ryan.

| There's probably not many other candidates out there who could unite the fans like Glenn could.
As has be said though the backroom team is vital. I was happy when Ronan Quinn got involved - good record with Confey and a top defender back in his day - didn't exactly help our defensive problems though.
The guys who did the strength and conditioning work with Offaly this year were the same guys who worked with Glenn in Longford - might give an indication into the sort of backroom team he put together but just as easily could mean nothing.
I've a mate who's a Newcastle fan. Shearer was one of the best players to ever play for the club yet when he took them over he wasn't able to keep them up in the Premiership, to some of their younger fans that's probably their only real memory of him. I'd hate for something similar to happen to Glenn.

| We talk about the lack of Kildare mental fortitude, who was the last Kildare manager to win an All-Ireland football semi-final at any level, who was the last Kildare captain to win an All-Ireland semi-final? Glenn is also well respected inside and outside the county, that will be important when it comes to raising finances.
Glenn also won 2 National League Titles (Div 3 & 4) with Longford. His championship record while poor in Leinster wasn't bad in the qualifiers including a win over Mayo. This is Longford, a county that has a population less that Naas and Newbridge combined.

| Rex who is the right man for the Kildare job to answer that a lot of us dont know. I really think it has to stay in house be it Glenn or whoever. I think we have to get the supporters back on side and with the likes of Glenn there this would happen. | |

Agree with this. It's not like there's going to be a queue of experienced outside managers at the door this time. Go with a local who knows the scene / players (particularly seeing as it looks like the County Championship will be over before the CB appoint someone). Whether it's Glenn or Brian (or Dermot or Johnny for that matter), a local has a much greater chance of galvanising squad and supporters.

| I agree Rex, however as you state should Glenn get the job, his decision to pick the right backroom team is his own. His fate and reputation is in his own hands, its up to him should he desire and become successful in getting the job, to prove that he is the man. Personally I believe he is and he will carry out (should he get it) the job to the utmost of his ability and passion. I believe he will start our revival. | |

Yeah it would be a pity if that happened to someone like Glenn or Anthony. For those of us of an older generation, John Crofton was one of our longest serving and best footballers during a very lean period. I think it's a shame how he's remembered as a figure of ridicule in some quarters for his unsuccessful stint as a Kildare manager, and not as a great Kildare player. The same thing seemed to happen to Brian Whelahan with the Offaly hurlers this year.

The same thing seemed to happen to Brian Whelahan with the Offaly hurlers this year. Crofton was an awesome defender in his day. One thing Kildare always seemed to produce was "thou shall not pass" full backs and centre backs. I am priveleged to have seen Crofton, Paddy O'Donoghue (another teak tough full back-cum-centre back) and Glen Ryan man our defensive spine. We've had nothing to match them in the last 10 years, Mick Foley coming closest but over as sustained a period as that trio. It's a real pity Crofton and O'Donoghue played in the era that they did and had just reached the end of the line when Micko arrived.

Why's that fone? Does he not want the job or do the county board not want him?

| What do you know Fone? I'm hearing a sub committe is being set up to appoint manager. Won't be expected to be ratified until November county board meeting! |

If the above is one of the criteria upon which we are going to pick the next manager, we may all give up!! That is ridiculous.

| Lads this is the GAA, where backstabbing, agendas, settling old scores and cutting off your nose to spite your face are all part of the landscape.
We all know Kildare GAA have a habitual ability of taking a shotgun and blowing off our two feet whenever there is a chance of doing something right.

| Surely, if the trouble is with one person, the majority on the CB can outvote that person. | |

You would think so. It is a significant person though. It's probably why someone else was approached a few weeks ago.

Have heard him linked with Tipp - I just cannot believe that, for a progressive county. That's a really attractive job now and there's got to be a much higher calibre of guy available for that. Anyway, no, the person approached was a Kildare native who was unavailable.

| Bloody hell, the county board are turning into Laois.... Wouldn't necessarily be the biggest Glen Ryan fan but in my time no man gave more for the Kildare jersey when he played and I'd be happy for him to have a crack at it. There's a lot of improvements required in the team but if he could get them playing with anything like the desire and aggression he showed himself as a player, it would be a start.
In Longford things didn't go great for the first two years and if they hadn't beaten Mayo 5 years ago he might have been gone at that stage. But he met the players, they suggested some changes (such as changing the trainer and fitness man) which he took on board and they improved in the next couple of years. The fact that he took on board suggested improvements and delegated a bit more showed a willingness to learn and take on board other people's ideas. He also stuck with Longford for 5 years and didn't quit when things were going against him which I admire.
If we're not careful, we'll end up with Alan Barry as the new manager.

| Fone the players had a meeting and wanted to keep Kieran McGeeney and look how that worked out. There's only one guarantee and that's that the players will have no say in who's the next manager. | |
