| There is no doubt that with the passing of time we as a county will really reflect and come to the conclusion that JD was probably one of the greatest if not the greatest player ever to don the white jersey for kildare, he is a living legend as we speak and his performance's this year is testememt to his drive and dedication to perform at the highest level for kildare............... long may it continue and hopefully on the 3rd sunday in september he will lead us to the holy grail.....................oh yeh, hope we get over derry on saturday first......... up the lilles | |

| I've recently had this conversation with my father and been born not too many years after Kildare won Sam in 28, he definitely was a suitably qualified candidate to answer that question; Is Johnny Doyle Kildare's greatest player,? Now I can only speak from my living memory and I don't want to offend anyone here who's father or relation played for Kildare over the years, But I think in my Humble opinion he is!
When I was growing my father always talked about the great Paddy Martin who played on the team that won Sam and multiple railway cups with leinster in the late 20's and early 30's, one of Kildares greatest footballers if not the greatest he has always said, but when we were talking about JD and I asked him the question, without hesitation he reckoned he is! and the great Paddy Martin dropped to second!!
Like what a more complete footballer, I am actually in aww of the guy he seems flawless and becoming better in his Autumn years, besides been a talented footballer he reads the game so well, he plays the game so fair, just gets on with it. Like look at the abuse JD has taken in the championship, he justs gets up hobbles or limps on and gets dug in again, until the next guy tries to up-end him.
I don't think the GAA realise what a great ambassador for the game they have in the great John Doyle. IMHO a True Legend of Gaelic Football!

What a pleasure indeed John Doyle is to watch in action, My memories were of mick Carolan/Tommy Carew/Pa Connolly/Pat Mangan/Pat Dunny /Ollie Crinnigan ,what a shame they didnt have a John Doyle in those days as we must have brought home Sam with just that lot on the field alone.

| A true great and one tough man,, how he gets back up and carries on playing after being on the receiving end of some of the roughest treatment I have ever seen dished out on a football field is a mystery,, one hell of a tough bloke. We call him "skin him Johnny" after hearing it shouted out at by kildare supporters at matches in his early days when he would take off with a burst of speed and leave defenders for dead. | |

| I have to say that he is easily the best Kildare player of the modern era. It was a different game years ago, when Larry Stanley and others were playing. Would he have survived the rough and tumble of the bygone era. Probably not. Never know! | |

| naked-lily If you asked the great man , he would tell you that Allenwood carried him down the years. Not only does he love his county but his love for his club is incredible. He is a revered figure in that part of the county. We even like him in our neck of the woods too A true gentleman in every sense of the word. | |

| I think the great man has been hugely under rated as a player in Ireland mainly because Kildare never really done well up until the last few years, now that we are in the top 3 or 4 teams in the country(according to P.Spillane anyway) he seems to be getting more recognition for the great player he is.
Not only that he is an absolute gent aswell.
Legend! | |

| It really is strange how JD only got his well earned and first all star last year. It should of been his third or fourth. Even since I saw him play for the first time I knew this guy was gona be a star. | |

| Apparently his Dad played junior football with Allenwood till he was 50, so there maybe a few more All Stars left in Johnny yet... | |

I remember marking Harry in one of those Junior B matches and he was still one of the fittest players on the pitch. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

| Factfile Name: Johnny Doyle Age: 33 Height: 6’ 1” Position: Corner forward/midfield Inter-county debut: 2000, Leinster GAA Football Championship v Louth Occupation: Sales Rep What’s on your iPod? I’d be a trad man, Christy Moore and all that kind of stuff. What’s your party piece? Johnny Cash’s A Boy Named Sue What would you like to change about your game? I would like to improve my left foot. What are your hobbies and interests outside the GAA? I don’t have a huge amount. I don’t play any other sports but I do like watching golf. What’s your favourite TV programme? The Inbetweeners. Who’s your sporting idol? Roy Keane. When I was younger I wanted to be… I wanted to play football for Kildare. Do you have any unusual pre-match routines or superstitions? I’m not into that at all. What’s your earliest GAA memory? Probably the first time I came to Croke Park when Dublin played Meath in a League final in 1987-88. What’s your favourite venue? Croke Park. Which county other than Kildare has the best supporters? You would have to think of the Clare hurling supporters when they won the All-Ireland in 1995. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Always practice the skills of the game. Which player would you bring to Kildare if there were a transfer rule? I’d have to say Colm Cooper (Kerry). Who is the most difficult opponent you have ever encountered? Glenn Ryan. You know you’ve been in a game after marking Glenn! Who is your all-time favourite GAA player? Larry Tompkins (Kildare/Cork) Who is the best player you have ever seen? For skill and natural ability Maurice Fitzgerald. I have to give an honourable mention to Dermot Earley too. Who has been the biggest influence on your career? My Dad. Who do you share with on away days? Ronan Sweeney or Dermot Earley. Dermot is always giving out! Who is your most confident team-mate? Niall Smith. Who has the worst haircut on the Kildare panel? Hugh McGrillen. Who is the biggest joker? Brian Flanagan. Who fancies themselves as a ladies man in the squad? A good few of them do. Name one Kildare player to watch out for the season? Pádraig Fogarty. Johnny was speaking in an exclusive interview with www.gaa.ie. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | |

| What other player in the country could be top scorer in the championship one year and the following year have the all round footballing ability to be able to be moved to midfield and play some of the best football of his career there also.
The Golden boy certainly could not play midfield, he would never be off the turf.
Gooch whilst being a great corner forward could not play midfield.
JD is in my humble opinion the best footballer in the country. No one has the all round footballing ability that he has. Defence, midfield, attack, corner forward. I think you could play him anywhere and he would do a job for you. Pat Spillane talks about natural footballers. I dont think there is one in the country as natural. |
