Sport is cruel

A sad way to have to bow out but he will go down as one of the all time great midfielders.

One of the all time Greats. Certainly a childhood hero of many. Will never forget the many games down through the years and memories of dermot playing. What a pity that he didn't win an all Ireland or even another leinster medal. I think the greatest thing he ever did that shows what a sportsman and legend he is, was when he played the day his father was buried. Will never forget that atmosphere in newbridge and the clap he got. Hero!!!

If true I wish him all the best in the future. A cruel way to go out of the in a career dogged by injury. In 2009 he was at the peak of his powers and he was unplayable.

A great player but more importantly a great man. A hero to supporters of my age and will continue to be down the years.
The Antrim game on the evening of his fathers funeral will always stay with me as a Kildare supporter.
One of the proudest days supporting the County was that evening. A county as one behind a single man and his bravery.

Thanks Dermot you are one of the players people will tell your Grand children about. Thanks for the dedication and the time you gave to our County. The Kildare shirt will be a little paler tonight.

He played the game the way it is meant to be played. A top class player on the field and a true gentleman off it. Thanks for all the memories Dermot, it's just a pity there couldn't have been a more fitting finale to a great career.

A pure gent and one of the great players of his era , Best Of Luck in your retirement , even though it was brought on by the cruel injury ,

He certainly deserved a better ending than he got. We will all have our memories of his outstanding moments but the ones that spring to mind for me were;
Winning the kickout to set up the winning goal in the Leinster final in 98.
Finding the net after 10 seconds of the second half in the 2000 Lienster final.
His towering display in the Leinster final in 02.
His defiant display against Wicklow in 09 when he scored 4 points I think and stopped what looked very much like another defeat to our neighbours.
His courage on that sad night in Newbridge.
Hope he has a good retirement and stays involved with Kildare football.

We all know this has been coming for a while but it doesn't make it any less sad. One of the all-time greats both on and off the pitch. I'm sure he will still have a big presence around the county set-up which is a reflection of the respect in which he is held.

made 45 championship starts 9 as a sub and scored 4 -32
made 49 league starts 7 as sub and scored 1 -23

One of our greatest ever players and one of the great midfielders of the modern era. Happy retirement Dermot, you will be hugely missed.

A great footballer and a great man. My outstanding memories of Dermot are visions of him fielding balls from the clouds in crowded midfield battles.
The blast for goal in 98 that rebounded off the crossbar, and his outstanding displays against all opposition in 2009.
The applause he received from his fellow all stars on the night of the awards, demonstrates the respect he has earned from his peers.
He showed bravery beyond the call of duty in battling back from illness and injury.
Best of luck to you Dermot. Truly one of the greats.

One of the greats one of my fondest memories of Dermot was the 02 Leinster final display took Dublin on and single handed nearly bet them on a week of sporting retirements this is by far the saddest best of luck in your future career Dermot

A brilliant player and a brilliant man. A credit to his parents. I hope he enjoys not putting his body through the mill anymore.

What more can you say about a legend of the game, injuries really held him back, a colluses of a man, no matter what obstacles were put in front of him he would overcome them . Good luck in your retirement maybe kildare will have a role for him, he would be some inspiration to players.
