- Jesus lads, any teams from the 90s wouldn’t hold a candle to the teams of today. Sports science has transformed the game, micko used to insist his players ate frys on the day of games ffs.
Look at how much teams score these days compared to the scores kildare put up in 98 and that’s with far more bodies in defence.
Watch how often players turn over the ball in the 90s under no pressure.
If you want to believe joe brollys misty eyed view that his era was the best than it’s up to you but you’d be barking up the wrong tree. That's irrelevant and very arguable. Improvements in sports science and fitness are not indications that the game have improved. I don't recall a great deal of games back then involving the massed blanket defence with 15 men behind the ball nor too many teams playing keep ball around their own 45 like Dublin do now. There were also far fewer hammerings. And championship meant something before the AI semi finals. And having 60k people watching Kildare used to be nice too! But anyway, the underlying point is that the 1998 team won two Leinsters. As 365 said, the current group have only shown potential at senior level so far. When they have some medals we can reassess their place in history.

| The way I look at it is if the 1998 - 2000 team trained like today's team and had the science to compliment, then in my view they win 9 out of 10 games between the two. Physically the 98 team would dominate and their hard edge and will to win would overwhelm today's team.
There are signs that the current squad may be developing that hard edge but they are not a patch on the likes of Ryan, Rainbow, Lacey, McCreery and Buckley

| If CON was in newbridge today he'd surely have to be looking at the towers keeper. Made a couple of great saves today which kept them in the game | |

James Robinson. Played one O'Byrne Cup match for Jason Ryan back in 2015. Had a good game alright. I presume the Mikey Quinn who played in goal for Eadestown is Niall Quinn's lad who declared for Dubs rather than us? Went off injured after conceding three or four goals.

| The point about their bloody mindedness is well made, but current team can kick points that the great 97-2000 team wouldn't even attempt | |

| The 98-00 team played against and stopped some of the greatest forwards ever to play the game being highly influential against us (Giles, Geraghty, Dowd, Maurice Fitz, Mike Frank Russell) the current team probably does score more and probably hits a higher percentage of scores to shots taken, not one of the current defenders or goalkeeper would make 98-00 side and neither of the midfielders would either. | |

| If we are watching players then watch defenders in particular. Last year's championship revealed Flynn and Murray so there could be someone else who could step up. Our defense and certainly our full back line is still short of options. | |

| Lads I've said it here before over the last few years Ballykelly have one of the best forwards in the county. Was told he was to small at minor and then wouldnt go for the u21s 2 years ago, I think he's 23 now.. I believe he scored 3-12 out of his clubs total of 4-17 in lastnight Junior championship . OK you'll probably say it only junior but the scores still have to be scored. JD never played minor or 21 and look how he turned out. . He worth keeping an eye on it think.. | |

Is it unfair to say the entire forum is very focused on the county matters. Can’t say I’ve ever read too many insights into the club game within the posts put up on this forum.

| I suppose it's the county that we all have in common and we don't have much interest in how other clubs are doing | |

Fair point, and I suppose as clubs exit the championship there will be less interest overall.

| Think Nash from Monasterevin is worth a look. Influential player for the Kildare U20 side and has carried that form into the latter end of the club championship too | |

| This year we have the luxury of having an AI winning U20 squad to add to the senior squad. There won't be the same pressure to unearth new players from the club championship like in recent years. If we could find one like Flynn or Murray like we did last year that would be a bonus. | |
