PostSubject: O'Byrne Cup 2011 Kildare v Longford 9th Jan 2011   O'Byrne Cup 2011 - Official Thread Icon_minitimeWed Dec 29, 2010 1:39 am

What would people like to see in the upcoming O'Byrne cup?

Fringe players getting a more sustained run in a attempt to prove themselves?

Who from all club championships should get their chance to stake a claim in the squad?
Does anyone know who has been called up?
Would anyone like to pick a potential line up?

Try another option at full back think hugh is more suited further up the pitch. Give Corley another chance in goals i think he's our best option or else maybe Connolly from Larries or the Clane keeper who's name escapes me at the mo.

Dara what planet you from?? If ever a case of robbing peter to pay paul!! Bolton, Flats and Conway if he makes it back would be super half back line!
Midfield and another corner back option are what we really need to find!

Robbie Eyres or Shane Connolly given a run in goals.

Wouldn't do much tinkering in the backs. Kelly and McGrillen (though both will probably be playing for their colleges during the O'Byrne Cup) should be left where they are. We could do with finding another corner-back to give Mac some competition - Seán Murphy or Conor Brophy possibly? I'd like to see either Chalky or Foley given a sustained run in the 6 shirt.

Midfield could be a problem position during the winter. One of Hugh Lynch, David Whyte or Rob Kelly will have to slot in there. Chalky or Foley could be other options but both are probably more at home in the half-backs.

The six forwards appear to pick themselves but we could do with finding one or two more to add to our options on the bench or for injury cover. I'd like to see Danny Egan and Darroch Mulhall given a run in the winter to see if they're capable of pushing for a place. I'd expect Keith Cribbin to make a serious push for one of the wing-forward positions in 2011.

Dara what are you smoking kid. Kelly got an all star for playing corner back this year and you want him out in the half back line?!

The Goalkeeping situation sorted. Shorty has the jersey but maybe try someone as KK has said.

Also another midfielder and a couple of those exciting young forwards that we have seen at underage over the last couple of years. Mulhall is the stand out choice to be given a run.

Good to have the game threads back again and I'm liking that avatar Fionn but I didn't know he carried a ladder with him for leg protection Wink

We need to nail down the goalkeeper, full back and centre back positions as early as possible, (by the fourth league game). I would like to see Robbie Eyres or Mark Donnelan given a chance. Chalkie or Mick Foley should be given an extended run at centre back. I suppose that management will priortise finding a functioning midfield pairing.

Shane Connolly should be given his chance- very solid keeper and excels at the basics. Him or Corley number 1 for me. Would like to see Mick Foley given a run at centre back and maybe the likes of Ciaran Graven, Tommy O' Neill or some others on the panel to cut their teeth at this level.

Surprised nobody has mentioned wanting to see Fionn Dowling given his chance. Looks a serious prospect. Would also like to see a new goalie tried out

I'm guessing he meant Rob Kelly.

Connolly or Corley to get a shot in goals, Shorty is probably still in front as number 1 choice but no harm in letting somebody else get some game time.

Don't think a half back line of Flanagan, Bolton and Morgan Flats needs too much tinkering done to it at the moment. Give Mick Foley a run in the number 6 shirt to allow Bolton a chance in midfield could be worth a decent shot. Brophy is the only name I can come up with at the moment for a shot in the full back line.

In midfield I'd like to see Rob Kelly get a chance to play, possibly moving Hughie Lynch into the half forward line as I don't think he has enough of a defensive side to his game to play midfield at the highest level.

Give Fionn Dowling and Keith Cribbin a run in the forward line and possibly giving a run out to Tommy Moolick at some stage too.

Be a good chance to give a few lads a nice run out and a chance to challenge for a spot on the team, hopefully be a good crowd and atmosphere for Glen coming back to Newbridge for this one.

Scanlan Walsh& Hendy all been tried, never could hold down a place so prefer to see chances given to younger lads like moolick, mulhall and the likes. We have an abundance of half backs, flats flano bolton conway chalky foley davy lyons cribben and i would place all these ahead of scan!

We're in trouble in midfield. Without Flynn and Earley we don't have natural midfielders.

Paul Flood has retired so there will be another keeper brought in - prob Connolly or Hennessy.

Hope the O'Byrne Cup is used to try players as competition is vital for those who are established. Not sure there is much point playing lads who have been on the panel for 5 or 6 years and haven't established themselves yet. Plenty of other lads knocking on the door.

There is a challenge vs Wexford on Monday so there might be some lads from juniors/u21's called up after that game.
