i hope your right fionn hes had a tough career though after fighting the cancer and now this. some legand the best fielder ive ever seen maybe we will see him again in a white jersey but as said before he owes us nothing.

He has came through bigger than this even centreback. There's no doubt in my mind he'll be back.

He'll give it one more crack. I think we'll find i hard to win silverware without him.

I wish the great man nothing but the best in his recovery. Seeing him soaring into the sky for balls is one of the great things about Kildare football and it will be missed terribly.

We all hope to see him in the white again but it must be very hard to go through that recovery again. He must also think about his life after football and if it could effect him in later years.

Whatever he decides it will be with the greatest amount of consideration. To see him again on the field of play would be worth anything but as has been said he owes us all nothing and will go down as one of the greats of Kildare.

That day last summer when he lined out after his fathers burial will live with me forever. Best of luck Dermot, I hope everything goes your way.

Christ, i know its been said before but sport is cruel, natural justice doesn't prevail and if you get over the line you are guided by inordinate amounts of good fortune...
If any one has the character to bounce back from this its Dermot, like jesus, the injuries and illnesses he has picked up over the years, lord god a full panel shouldn't have to contend with never mind one man. To get back from a potentially life threatening disease and pick up his second all star is nothing short of mind blowing.
Hopefully his last appearance for Kildare will not have been that ill fated 90 seconds against Meath and he can go out on a real high, however sport isnt like that. Its cruel and senseless and if there was any justice or equity to it you would like to think that we would have dined at the top table and welcomed sam to our clubhouses for might winter celebrations.
What a man though, great memories, his debut point v meath in 97, fetching the ball in the middle and delivering it into lynch to set up murphys goal in 98, filling in for nuxer midfield agianst the all ireland champs in the semi, his goal at the start of the second half against Dublin in the epic comeback in 2000, even the comical goal chance he missed against offaly in 04 in newbridge, his epic and heroic displays in 08 and 09. In 09 he dragged the team to the all ireland quarter final,. when backs were against the wall against wicklow he was the man that stood up to the plate,

Easter is coming and in the spirit of that i have no doubt that our lord will rise again, into the sky in a white jersey in croke park and bringing down the ball and setting up another attack. Trade mark.

Heart broken for the man...all the best with the recovery Dermo

For some reason I always thought that we would not see the big man this year but I did not think the set back would be this big. However I am with the lads who believe this legend will fight on and will again be the man to push us on.

Get better soon big man.

I heard the same thing tonight. It'll be sad if he goes out like this but he definitely owes nothing to the jersey like vodafone said. he's a hero.

It was reported on the radio yesterday, not sure which one that J.D said Dermot has no intention of retiring and he will be back next year. Not sure of the accuracy of that but it's the only thing I've heard.

I hope he does come back, it would be a crying shame to go out after his career and efforts on the injury list.

Geezer says he's confident Dermot will react in the right way... take from that what you want but I'd expect him back. He was very unimpressed with attempts to retire him last year.

As mentioned yesterday, Podge Fogarty was going to start - what's also interesting is that he says Mikey Conway would be a bonus if he was to make it.

from Daragh O'Conchúir's Blog:

Kieran McGeeney has told Dermot Earley to take his time before thinking about his future at inter-county level but is backing the Kildare midfielder to come back as strong as ever if he decides to do so. Earley is coming to terms with rupturing the cruciate ligament in his right knee, just five months after having the same injury plus a micro-fracture on the top of his cartilage operated on.

The 32-year-old was not in Newbridge on Sunday as Kildare finished off their Allianz League campaign with an injury-time victory over Sligo and McGeeney revealed that he had told the two-time All-Star to give himself some time to think about what he wanted to do. The Kildare boss reckons that Earley has the mental strength to start the gruelling rehabilitation process all over again but admits that is a very tough challenge for the Sarsfields clubman. “We’re planning without Dermot at the minute but the one positive for him is that it will give the micro-facture more time to heal” said McGeeney. “It’s a tough one to come back from, it’s not good for him but he’s a tough fella upstairs and hopefully he’ll react in the right way to it. “You can’t talk for the fella (with regard to what he is going to do). I told him to stay away (on Sunday) and let him gather his thoughts. He’s enough going on. It’s been a tough year for him so just let him off for a day or two and see what he comes back with.”

McGeeney has a number of other injury problems with Rob Kelly pulling a hamstring at training on Thursday night, although he hopes that the Straffan man will not be out of action for too long. Padraig Fogarty will be sidelined for three weeks after going over on his ankle on Thursday night as well. It was particularly bad luck on the young St Laurence’s player – a first cousin of Kildare captain Johnny Doyle – who like fellow seniors Fionn Dowling and Tommy Moolick, is a recruit from last year’s minor crop. “He was going well and it would have been nice to see him” McGeeney declared. “He’s young and he’s keen and you can’t beat anybody who’s keen. Alan Smith has missed out on the latter stages of the league with back and ankle injuries while Mikey Conway, who hasn’t played since tearing his cruciate in an All-Ireland qualifier against Wicklow in July 2009, is continuing to progress.

Given how long he has been out of action though, it is no surprise that McGeeney would regard it as “a bonus” if the Nurney man was to be available for first round of the championship against the Garden County next month. “He’s starting to do his deceleration stuff which is a big step for him so I’m hopeful. It’d be a bonus but the man deserves some bit of luck along the way.”

Earley ruled out for the rest of the season as Kildare injury list mounts

Last Updated Apr 2011

By Ger McNally
KILDARE were dealt a huge blow last week when the news broke of a recurrence of Dermot Earley’s cruciate knee injury which will certainly rule the big Sarsfields man out for the rest of the season.

“We weren’t planning with Dermot at the minute but the one positive for Dermot is that it’s gives the micro fracture a chance to heal. It’s a tough one to come back from, it’s not good for him. He is a tough fella upstairs though and hopefully he’ll react in the right way from it,” said manager Kieran McGeeney but he refused to be drawn on whether we have seen the last of the 32-year-old in a Kildare jersey.

“You can’t talk for the fella. I told him to stay away today (for the game against Sligo) and gather his thoughts, he has enough going on, he has had a tough year so we just let him off for a day or two.”

McGeeney also used the opportunity to give an update on a number of Kildare’s walking wounded.

“Smithy’s (Alan Smith) ankle went and then his back went, it’s been one thing after another for him, it’s been a tough year for him too but you can’t be waiting around and it’s great to see Fionn out there. If he hits his target one of these he could get a great tally. He is keen and he is gutsy and you can’t ask for more than that. He got three points on Sunday and probably could have got a few more, that’s why we put Jimmers on, to see if we could be a wee bit more clinical.” For Rob Kelly, the hope is that it’s ‘a minor thing.’

“He did a wee bit here on Saturday morning but he could feel his hamstring when he was running, hopefully it will be just a ten day thing though.”

Padraig Fogarty would have started on Sunday were it not for his injury woes.

“Podge hurt his ankle and will probably be out for three weeks. He was going well and it would have been nice to see him out there today, again, he is young and he is keen and you can’t beat anybody who is keen.”

And finally and most encouragingly of all, there was cautious optimism that there may be light at the end of the tunnel for Mikey Conway.

“He was starting to do his deceleration stuff today which is a big step for him. I’m hoping, it would be a bonus but the man deserves a wee bit of luck somewhere along the line.”

from hoganstand

Kildare selector Niall Carew has said that the loss of veteran star Dermot Earley through injury is a huge blow for the Lilywhites.

The towering midfielder suffered a set-back in his bid to recover from a cruciate ligament injury, and is set to go under the knife again in a few weeks, but is looking towards next year's O'Byrne Cup to make a return in a white jersey.

"Of course he's a massive loss," Carew said.

"It's very disappointing. He'd put in so much work to get himself back. There was another underlying problem, bruising on the bone. He's eyeing the O'Byrne Cup already. That's Dermot."

Great news about Leper, that's a relief. There's also a dose of reality about Mikey. Sounds to me like he's a good bit away yet.

In the herald today it says Mark O'Sullivan has done his cruicate playing for Celbridge, if it's true it looks like looks like our cruciate curse is still going strong. hopefully he's the last for a long time. Very disappointing for him and his club, hope he makes a quick recovery
