Part of the problem is that the profile of ladies football in Kildare is low, as witnessed by the paltry attendance at home games. Therefore it's not seen as a high profile sport, in turn leading to a lack of interest among potential county players.
When the County trials were being held, I asked a number of players on our senior panel if they were interested in going forward, I am not saying they would have been good enough, however it would possibly have kept them interested in playing and training for the club. They all said no, for various reasons.
If ladies football in Kildare had a higher profile and was marketed better, then more girls would possibly be interested in playing.
Slightly off topic, one trend we are seeing in our club at the moment is that the less skillful girls are starting to play rugby, as they are finding it easier, less hand to eye co-ordination, less running off the ball, no soling etc. They will have the basic fitness when the rugby season finishes, however this will be ultimately detrimental as when they come back from rugby they are inclined to be too physical.
