I’d read more into performances at u20/u21 than minor. There’s a lot made of the Leinster minors we’ve won, but the uncomfortable fact is that we didn’t exactly get a bumper harvest out of any of them. Current senior panelists from those teams as far as I remember:
2013: Neil Flynn, Chris Healy.
2015: Conor Hartley (think Kevin Flynn was on the panel).
2016: Mark Dempsey, Tony Archbold, Jason Gibbons, Jimmy Hyland.

It’s fairly underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to win minor titles, but I’d read a lot more into Dublin’s four u21 All Irelands in recent years.

Can't argue with any of that O2B.
However, our minor record was very poor and we have now arrested that brilliantly. The next step is now to carry that through to U20 and start winning titles at that age group. This is the next huge challenge in the county as there does seem to be a drop off after the minor is finished.

I take the point that there is a drop off some years after minor but we won the U20 All-Ireland last year!

Our team has been largely built around the 2013 U21 team for the last few years and it's been hard for other players to break through. I would have expected more players from the excellent 2013 minor team to have got on the team by now. Hopefully we can do a better job bringing through players from last years U20s.

That 2013 Minor Team was excellent.. and the one that broke the Provincial gap of 20 odd years.. we've got nowhere near enough out of that Team.
Dan Flynn. Cien mcmonigle.. and more I'm leaving out.

Seamus you can say that again about 2013 team – trashed a Dublin team featuring Eoin Murchan, Colm Basquel and Con O'Callaghan.

I remember thinking Cein McMonagle and Wayne Fitzpatrick were the future of Kildare football... Pretty sure we're the only county in the country who'd happily let a superstar team like that get away. I suppose the difference in Dublin & Kerry is that they get the likes of O'Callaghan, David Clifford and Seanie O'Shea into the senior set-up at all costs – whereas in Kildare we let Jack Robinson and Padraig Nash play in the Leinster junior final.

Kildare underage teams this decade have also beaten Dublin sides featuring Jack McCaffrey, Ciaran Kilkenny, Brian Howard... Meanwhile Donegal, Monaghan, Galway all Div 1 teams and we're nobodies. It is absolutely tragic.

Anyway, looking forward to Galway match tomorrow, albeit Galway specialise in pissing on our dreams. They are like Chiggurh in No Country For Old Men - you think you're going places, then they turn up & take you out with a stun-gun to the forehead.

Best of luck to the lads – a semi-final in Croker be a nice one to look forward to. Match being streamed on TG4 YouTube channel at 7 for those who, like me, can't make it.

Goes to show how irresistible our senior set-up was!

Imagine suggesting in Kerry that Clifford & O'Shea play for the juniors... After the laughter had died down, I know what the response would be.

Incidentally, I shared the train up that day with Aaron Masterson & James Murray... Anyone noticing a trend here...

First priority of new manager is to get all the best players into the squad. If he fails in that then it says more about the mentality of young players these days than it does about the senior set up.
Some players are happy to concentrate on club football and having a social life and its hard to blame them for that. The emphasis has to be on getting more competitive at U20 level, this is where Dublin are doing so well and it is a much more reliable guide to future senior football.
Best of luck to them tomorrow but its hard to be confident against Galway!

All I'm going to say is this: it's the 21st century & if you're expecting young lads to give up their lives for something, you better be ready with the hard sell.

Is there a concrete four-year plan to win a trophy & do something legendary or are we hoping to "consolidate" in Div 2?

We need to get serious in Kildare about whether we're going to beat Dublin and win Leinster in the next four to five years. If that isn't the plan, I really don't blame players for not committing. And if isn't, it would be nice if the county board and next management could communicate it to us fans so we're not wasting our time.

The next manager NEEDS to have this clear in this head, a la McGuinness or Horan. Kildare can't just settle for being another team anymore.

Back to tomorrow's game...

Haunted your right if your expecting young lads to give up their lives for the like of the year we have had people are delusional...… there are so many outside factors that need to be factored in also...

As i said my belief is that we would be lucky to get 2 a year but whoever the next manager is i hope he brings something radical to the table...…. to me we have the raw materials in Kildare to compete at a high level but need an injection of stubbornness...…. and a reality of what it takes to compete at the highest level and not just fake it..... like we have been faking tackling for last few years which to me sets the tone....

I was chatting to one of that 2013 minor team who got a call up from CON last year.. basically he was told it would take a year for him to make the break trough.. he didn't go in.

There's an awful lot of waffle about "the step up" – Cian a chief culprit.

It's all about how you manage it and other counties put us to shame. Look at young Gallen up in Donegal - given a few cameos this year and has been sensational. Four points against us in the league. Kicked another mighty one against the Kingdom the last day.

He's 18 for Christ's sake!!

Meanwhile our All Ireland winning U20 team apparently not ready for playing time in a team who've done F all this year. Horrific.

Not defending anyone here or putting anyone to a sword...… i more than most think young lads should be given a chance and i would go so far as to say that any player over 25 that are just hanging around an intercounty panel for years and never see Championship time should not be kept on a panel and a younger player should be in there.....

However one problem the new manager will encounter is if you are introducing an 18 year old you need proper 'men' players around him not players who have got bullied all year like we have...… to me only Fergal Conway stood out in this regard this year..... like look John Doyle was introduced into a team of men and would be easy to do this in years gone by with even a spine of Davy Dalton, Glenn, Sos, Nuxer, Willie Mac, Rainbow etc etc.....

Team for tomorrow named as follows;

1 Cian Burke (Clane)
2 Joel Kavanagh (Kilcullen)
3 Conan Boran (Eadestown)
4 Tommy Gill (Carbury)
5 Ryan Comeou (Balyna)
6 Oisin O'Rourke (Athy)
7 Jack Quinn (Leixlip)
8 Shane Flynn (Balyna)
9 Kevin Eustace (St Laurences)
10 Adam Conneely (THM)
11 Aedan Boyle (Balyna)
12 Eoin Bagnall (Alymer Gaels)
13 Eoin Meehan (Moorefield)
14 Aaron Browne (Celbridge)
15 Ciaran O'Brien (Kilcullen)

Subs; Sean Knight, Daniel Woulfe, PJ Cullen, Mikey Spillane, Matthew Whelan, Mikey Delahunty, Luke Gorman, Oisin Milmoe, Mark Maguire

Galway were going for 5 in row before Mayo narrowly bet them a few weeks ago and I suppose no Kildare team can ever be too confident heading into a game against them. That said though they were beaten by Roscommon in the first group game in Connacht and were ran very close by Sligo in Tuam.

Like a lot of previous underage teams we seem a bit top heavy when it comes to standout performers so far. Conneely, Bagnall, Meehan, Browne and Milmoe have all put in seriously impressive performances over the last few months in the forward line with different players stepping up in different games.

Mikey Spillane and Mark Maguire have been impressive too at times so along with Milmoe at least we know we have some strong options off the bench.

Best of luck to all.

But lads, the year Kildare had was better than the years half the other counties in the country had. This is the reality. And that's one of the major reasons your Kerry and Dublin lads come through... the prospect of success. Another, as mentioned already, is people making the reasonable choice of not wanting to live that lifestyle. Then some don't progress.

Making superstars of lads at 18 doesn't help either and honestly, some of the names mentioned in the same paragraph as David Clifford above would be mortified themselves I'd say.

Absolutely, you want the best possible set-up to make it as attractive as possible but you'll still only be able to play 15 and you'll still have lads decide that it's not for them.

Expecting underage teams, even All-Ireland-winning underage teams, victorious in an absolutely completely different environment, to step up en masse is delusional. When you have an unreal talent, they will but they remain outliers. Hopefully a few more will come through in the next few years and you'd imagine a new set-up will be very keen to have a look at a lot of them for a few months slog through the winter and spring.

Kildare beaten by a strong team. Kildare backs a little bit too fouly and too loose. Some very good players all the same. Conneely a very classy player.

Mayo won as well, Connacht football clearly stronger at minor level this year.
However Dublin look set for another U20 title, they clearly know how to improve in those 3 interval years. That's why they will continue to dominate at senior for many years to come.

Hard luck lads. We can have no complaints about the result - Galway were the better team. They cleaned us at midfield and we couldn’t handle their running game, particularly their number 11 Warren Joyce. And our discipline let us down.

Good displays by Bagnall and Browne again. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot of these players playing for Kildare in the future.

Very disappointing performance and result, credit to Galway who played really well throughout and were strong all over the pitch.

Responded well to the goal straight from throw in and kicked some nice points, just couldn't get back into after Galway started the 2nd half strongly and started to pull away a bit.

Disappointing end to a good year, we've enjoyed some very games and performances along the way and it'll be exciting to see how some of these players progress with the U20's over the next few years as well.

Bummer.... I've still never seen Kildare beat Galway at any level. It's ludicrous at this stage!

Galway always produce classy, stylish footballers in fairness. Dublin teams are pretty boring to watch but  I have to say Galway and Kerry always play with real flair. I enjoy watching Mayo as well but in a different way – they really go for it and always play in a really dynamic manner.

Galway should be seriously targeting a senior All Ireland in the next three to five years. Need a new manager though... Walsh not up to it, has them playing an atrocious brand of football.
