From early on in the year I hear the county final was between Colgan and Brendan Cawley as all the other perceived top refs have gotten one recently. With Bredan being a sash man Colgan was the obvious choice.

I have no knowledge on the merits of these refs but this idea of Muggins Turn for the County Final is crazy.

Its not that far back that a Final was destroyed with a 60 something getting a turn that I feel he was never good enough for.

The best Ref in the County should be doing the Senior Final. End of.

Half time inter final 6 pts each, a very defensive affair so far with only 1 or 2 pts from play.a few soft yellow cards given out to

Pity you didn't practice what you preach back in the day.

was at the game saturday. It was a poor affair with both teams very defensive and both teams afraid to make a mistake. Monasterevin were better but it wa certainly there for Raheens to win it with a little more risk taking. Now that monasterevin are senior I think they will hold their own up there.

I was at the game and it was a very poor game kinda stop start game. I don't no what Raheens were doing they were playing into Monasterevin hands time & time again kicking stupid long balls into a two man forward line Monasterevin just had extra men there mooping up all round. Monasterevin got a very lucky goal and were reliant on frees for scores I don't think they scored a point from play?. Fair play to Monasterevin they were probably the best team this year in the intermediate but they will have it tough next year in the senior ranks.

Poor enough game alright, but Monasterevin wont give a toss what we think. They deserved to win the match, no doubts. How they will cope at Senior is one for another Day. Interestingly enough I was talking to a fella who told me that Monasterevin beat Carbury and St Laurences, aand drew with Athy and Sarsfields in the League, the 4 Senior Semi Finalists, so the form was good. Cant believe that young lad started / played in the Inter Final after only coming off the field playing, and losing a Minor Final , hats off to ya.

Think he scored 9 points in the Minor, mostly frees. Wasn't as involved as I'd have expected from general play. Larries no. 6 did a good enough job marking him. Aaron Bannon Whelan was Monasterevins most influential player in the Minor.

In the Senior game he scored a 45 but didn't get on much ball. Subbed in the final 5 mins. when the game was won.

AIB Leinster Club Junior football Championship

First round.

Sun 14th October 2012

St Conleths Park , Newbridge.

Referee A Nolan (WW).

Clogherinkoe (KE) 2-08 vs Newtowncashel (LD) 1-09.

Kildare Junior Champions ,Clogherinkoe played the Longford Intermediate Champions , Newtowncashel , on a cold and damp St Conleths pitch on Sunday .

Newtowncashel got the first score of the game when Kieran Mulvihill kicked a left footed point from 20 mtrs out, into the scoreboard end ,after 5 minutes.

The slippy conditions made it difficult for any fluent football and players on both sides were slipping and sliding throughout the game.

Danny Grehan got the Cloghs first score on 8 minutes and what a score it was !

Neil Bergin , Dean Hanley and Mark Nolan worked the ball to the overlapping Danny Grehan , who had the presence of mind not to pick the ball up but to blast it , to the net , “soccer” style.

Cein McMonagle added another point for the Cloghs on 12 minutes .

A minute later Kevin McEvoy bravely went down for a low ball and was subsequently fouled , 48 mtrs from the Newtowncashel goal. Brian Gravin took the resulting free kick. Brian`s free landed short , but the ever alert Robbie Dunne was on hand again , as he was in the County Final , to flick the ball to the net ..GOAL !!!.

Clogherinkoe were in control at this stage and had numerous opportunities to increase their lead. However , they didn’t make their dominance count.

On 15 minutes Kieran Mulvihill fly kicked the ball over the Clogherinkoe bar to double his own and his team`s score to 2 points.

Cein McMonagle scored his second point for the Cloghs on 16 minutes ,when he was played in by Kevin McEvoy , to increase the Cloghs lead to 6 points.

A misplaced pass in the Clogherinkoe attack lead to a swift counter attack by Newtowncashel which resulted in a free and a point by Shane Merrigan on 20 minutes.

Left corner forward Derek Farrell switched corners for a while and on 28 minutes he was fouled while heading for goal . Gary Kenny stepped up and pointed the free to reduce the deficit to 2-02 vs 0-04 in favour of the Kildare Champs at half time.

Newtowncashel got a perfect start to the 2nd half.

Within 4 minutes ,after a fast ,running , hand passing movement they created space for Kieran Mulvihill in front of the Clogherinkoe goal. The Cloghs defence had no option but to foul him….. Penno .!

Peter Foy duly dispatched the ball to Gary Ryan`s left hand side and into the net . The margin now down to 1 point.

Would the Cloghs rue their missed opportunities of the first half ?

On 6 minutes Cein McMonagle slipped past four opponents to engineer space for himself , which he fully utilised by boxing the ball over the bar to increase the Cloghs lead to 2 points.

2 minutes later Neil Bergin was fouled just as he was about to “pull the trigger” , and Cein McMonagle pointed the free kick from 25 mtrs out .

Gary Kenny kicked a free over the bar for Newtowncashel on 17 minutes and this score seemed to lift his team somewhat .

The Longford Intermediate Champions got a grip on the middle third of the pitch and dominated possession for the next 7 minutes.

Shane Merrigan reduced the margin to the minimum on 19 minutes and he kicked the leveller , right footed , from 35 mtrs out on 21 minutes.

The pendulum was swinging the way of the Longford team at this stage .

Gary Kenny`s free taking was top class and he added another pointed free on 22 minutes , 40 mtrs out , to put his side in front for the first time in the game.

Newtowncashel could do no wrong and ,after forcing a foul 35 mtrs out from the Cloghs goal , Gary Kenny again split the posts to increase his sides lead to 2 points with 7 minutes remaining .

Robbie Dunne and Brian Gravin linked up to find Paul Lowry ,who showed grit and determination to kick a point , while under severe pressure from the Newtowncashel defence , on 25 minutes .

With time running out and scores at a premium it was looking like this game was heading the way of the Longford Champions However , Dean Hanley played a high ball towards the Clogherinkoe forward line .Cein McMonagle brilliantly outfielded two Newtowncashel defenders , turned and shot over the levelling point on 29 minutes.

Straight from the kick out the ball broke to Danny Grehan who shot over the bar from 40 mtrs out , away on the right hand side .

Now 1 point in arrears the pressure was on Newtowncashel.

But is was the Cloghs who again gained possession from the kick out and , driving at the Longford team`s defence forced a foul 40 mtrs out . Cein McMonagle sealed victory by kicking the free over the bar .

The final whistle blew and , just like in the County final , Clogherinkoe dug deep when they had to and grinded out another magnificent win .

Clogherinkoe ; G Ryan , D Lowry , S McEvoy , C Grehan , T Hickey , T Reilly , K Mc Evoy, B Gravin, D Grehan, D Hanley , R Dunne, C McMonagle, N Bergin, W Coyne, M Nolan .

Subs used : B Kenny , B Kelly , P Lowry , Pat Farrell , J Kane.

Newtowncashel; G Nealion, R Farrell , C Casey , R Muldoon, P Foy, P Farrell, L Casey , G Dennigan, J Rowan, G Kenny , A Rowan , N Donlon, K Mulvihill, S Merrigan, D Farrell.
