| Kildare very lucky to win, Carlow dominated the 2nd half and should have won. We scored 1-3 to no score in the opening 10 mins but were then outscored 1-9 to 0-4 until near the end. Hard to find any positives from that performance as the pitch was very slippery but Carlows handling was markedly better than ours. Midfield continues to be a problem and the Carlow no. 9, Foley I think, dominated the area. Chalky improved when moved to defense in the latter stages. None of the fringe players stood out and it looks like we will be relying on the same players as last year. Hope we win our last game as we look like we will need a few more games to find our best 15. | |

| Sad to see Mick go. Thought he could have being an option for us around mid field this year.
Murphy didnt tog out for Carlow last night and its just as well as Foley did enough damage on his own. Hard to take anything from the game. Podge took his goal well when it came to him and I though Farrell done well when introduced. Apart from Kelly, Fitz and Paudi and Chalky at times there was little else good about us last night.
Will be very interesting to see what team Ryan puts out on Sunday. If we lose our next game is in the league and at the moment I would not like to be heading there the way we are played last night.

| The point of the O'Byrne Cup is to weed out lads who are not up to Inter County standard as well as unearth a couple who are.
I'd suggest on the basis of last night those who are not up to it have probably been identified.
When the dust settles I wouldn't expect to see too many changes from last years panel come League time. Getting everyone back fit / healthy and raring to go come first week of Feb has to be #1 priority.
Of last years team : a fit Peter Kelly / Paul Cribben / Mick O'Grady / Darroch Mulhall / Eoin Doyle would be major additions.

Mulhall Big Tom Smith/Flats I'd have Tommy Moolick in midfield with Paidi going to wing forward instead of Paul Cribbin (who I don't think will be fit) I'd go for Flats instead of Niall Kelly and Podge ahead of Tomas but these are fairly close calls.

| Shame about Foley, one of my favourite Kildare players. Gave everything he had and at his peak around 2009-2011 was a formidable player and leader. Lost a yard of pace last year and it hampered him big time, but he was still a man you would trust to give everything he had for the jersey. Very disappointing to see him go but best of luck to him. We are losing a hell of a lot of leadership in a team that is not brimming with natural leaders.
Couldn't make last nights game but needing a late goal to beat Carlow is worrying. I know the conditions were poor but both teams had to face the same. Doesn't bode well for those picked last night.
Sunday's game should be a decent encounter for this time of year. Winner goes through, so Ryan if he wants to progress will need a strong team. Might be a bit more edge to it as well which will help the squad going into the league.
The team for the league will probably be the usual names, Sunday will give us a better direction of what Ryan is thinking.

Flats/Smith our two best forwards.
Moolick ahead of Lynch too.

| Mick Foley was a great player for Kildare. He did a fantastic job in that difficult full back position considering he was always more of a half back or midfielder. | |

| Fantastic goal by Podge last nite but one thing which really annoyed me (i know its only OB Cup) was that with about 3 mins left and we were a point down and won a free just inside 45. Ref moved it up 10 yards cos Carlow player (unluckily maybe) got in way of free. So two mins left, a pointdown and wind not terribly strong , Podge decides to hit a crossfield pass which went all wrong and ended up in score for Carlow. Ball was about 30 yards max out on edge of semicircle, right side for a rightfooted kicker. Hope he learned his lesson.Kick it over FFS. | |

| Gavin Farrell being rewarded for very decent impact when coming on Wednesday night.
While Wednesday was brutal generally, I wouldn't be massively concerned except that there isn't the depth some people think but you're down to people who might be third, fourth or fifth choice in their position.
One massive positive was Peter Kelly though. To see him up close, with the intensity of his tackling, is an absolute joy to behold. Will be massive to have him and Eoin Doyle back in defence.

The winners of the group with DIT, Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow IT. Looking like DIT at this stage. Meath v Dublin in the other semi.

| Mulhall's form so far looks impressive. 20 points in 3 games, half of them from play. Good to see that he has picked up where he left off last year before his operation.
I hope Moolick's injury is not too serious. We need all our midfield players fit for the national league.

| If it's the medial ligament as suggested by the hoganstand article then it mightn't be too bad. Obviously it depends on the severity of the injury, but most of these types of injuries don't need surgery and the player could be back within 6 weeks (like Sergio Aguero's recent injury) Fingers crossed for Tomas.
On the match, Kildare played well but UCD were poor. It was impressive the way we kept the intensity and workrate up for the full match. At the back, Gavin Farrell played well for the 3rd game in a row. I'm not sure if he'd have the pace to mark a really fast corner forward but he is good at breaking out of defence and uses the ball well. Fitzy and Eoin Doyle had good games, tackling hard and driving forward. Chalky and Hugh Lynch did well in midfield. Nothing too flashy - a lot of hard graft and intelligent use of the ball. Up front, we played well. Darroch Mulhall couldn't miss today and Fionn Dowling got 4 from play as well. Leper's passing was excellent and Flats grew into the game after a slow start. Tomas played well but I thought we played too many balls into him in the 1st half and were becoming predictable. Pity we are not playing Dublin or Meath next week as we could do with a hard test at this stage.

| If it's a grade 3 MCL tear he's looking at a few months on the sidelines. Obviously a grade 1 or 2 wouldn't be as severe. Hopefully there is no other damage to the knee. | |
