| One might think that Dublin and Kerry have some kind of pull in Croke Park when it comes to these kinds of decisions. There is definitely a case of "we're alright jack" about it. Croke Park are happy as long as the money is coming in, they have worries about how they get it. They killed their most profitable province stone dead with the financial doping of Dublin, so need to replace that lost income, hence the super 8 or whatever they want to call it.
As kk said, it only helps a few Counties, but they are strong already. If we did get into the last eight by some miracle, we'd be sent to Portlaoise or Croke park quicker than you can say health and safety. There would be no benefit to us.It could only happen in the GAA where none of the players club or County want it, but County boards will push it through.
There needs to be a change in the structure, no doubt about it, but making the strong stronger is ridiculous and typical of the way the GAA has gone in the last 10 years.
There is revolution in the air and if they are not careful Croke Park and their cash cows are going to be on the end of it.

| Saw a good proposal from JOE.IE about splitting into Senior and Intermediate championship. Great proposal when you look at it, although it still limits the clubs to September october and beyond. Definitely work a look lads: https://www.sportsjoe.ie/gaa/how-a-world-cup-format-would-condense-the-club-and-county-season-into-11-months/100569Saw a few good proposals online recently. Simplicity being the word for most but hugely effective. One suggestion was to have 2 months of Intercounty, 2 months of Club action, 3 intercounty and 3 Club. I.e. League in Jan/feb. (removal of O'Byrne Cup) Club action March/April. Provincial in May followed by separate grouped competition June and July. Club Running Aug,Sept Oct. Whilst a system like this suggestion would be busy it would certainly provide some balance for Club players. Also in terms of Counties - all would have a minimum of 4 games - one in provincial and 3 in round robin group stages. I just hope the Super8 is defeated at congress. A huge step in the WRONG direction for all involved. | |

Clubs would have decided at CB........ How many of the 44 (apprx.) for & how many against ?
Did Dermot influence Sash vote ?

| What is the actual argument FOR the round-robin quarters? What is the official reason for it. Obviously, if you're having a round-robin, it should be at the start of the process, not the end. Even the cricket, when they have their super six series, they've come about their top six after a round-robin.
I was told that seven county panels voted in favour of the round-robin: Tyrone, Cavan, Dublin, Galway, Armagh, Kerry and Laois.

| From last year when announced:
A statement from the GAA claimed that the proposals would lead to a more dramatic Championship than the current one offers and would theoretically end situations where teams, like Kerry this year, beat two teams from the same province to reach the semi-final stage.
The statement read: "The new structure would provide a more exacting pathway to the All-Ireland final: the finalists will have had to compete with three of the best teams in the country at the group stage, followed by a semi-final with a top-four team that came through the same test.
"This will have the effect of ensuring that the finalists will have been equally tested and that the two best teams in the country contest the All-Ireland final."
"Both All-Ireland semi-finals would be played over the one weekend which should generate greater excitement and also ensure both teams have the same period of time to prepare for the All-Ireland final."
The GAA also sought to assure smaller counties that they will not be hindered by missing out on the group stages and insisted that extra revenue would be ring-fenced to aid their development.
The document claimed that: "The new structure should increase commercial and broadcast income from the All-Ireland senior football championship. A significant proportion of this increase should be ring-fenced for development in our less successful counties."

| Good man - last two lines most significant, and the ring-fencing is the sop. And listen, it may be true, but it can't all be about the money. They're making plenty centrally.
The crap before it is some bollocks. Playing both semi-finals the same weekend is spot on - but has nothing to do with the round-robin.

| He is a likeable man and maybe that's it but how does Paraic Duffy get away with not being slated? Look at the unaddressed issues under his tenure, and the increase in issues due to him leading a capitalist association masquerading as a charity, and a plutocracy masquerading as a democracy. He's absolutely useless. | |

Sure let them get murdered by auld lads...... I well remember Ronan Quinn making his championshp debut. Came on as a sub, age 16, caught a igh ball in the middle of the field. Cute hoor grabbed collar of jersey & pulled him down onto his back and then kicked him on the head... Yea the culprit, a supposed hard-man, was cheered to the echo by his clubs supporters in the stand that day in Conleth's....

| I only presume we're backing it because the Monastrevin motion was passed at convention, as to whether it's a good idea I can see both sides of it. The game is a lot cleaner now than when Ronan Quinn was 16. | |

I would love to see a countrywide players' strike.

| Division 2 all over the place. Down not won a game since the ice age beat Meath who skittled Derry last week. I now have no idea what points you would need to stay up or get promoted. Whatever it is it will be tight and probably come down to scoring average.

| OK so everyone says that the GAA top brass i.e. Duffy and Co came up with this idea that the majority of GAA folk are dead set against. Now I ask a genuine question of how many county players or members of this forum exercised their democratic right at their club meeting and sent a delegate to the county board to vote against the Super 8?
People talk about the GAA being disconnected but so too are the GPA and if the CPA are all about the clubs how come they can't influence decision-makers at club level? No use with Twitter outrage when the thing is coming down the line. The delegates are given a mandate by club members who are volunteers and players and they vote accordingly. There was a mechanism there to stop it, but it wasn't used.

Pat Spillane wouldn't agree with you. It's hard on rural clubs.. take young Clifford who won an AI minor with kerry, but couldn't line out for his club even if he wanted to.

| 70% of players rejected #Super8 proposal, 76% of delegates supported it. Theres a serious disconnect here.... #GAAcongress17
The above is from Kevin Reilly and the 70% of players is from the 1.5% that the GPA represent.
The CPA are releasing a statement outlining today what they want in future and one mad idea is to join the club committee. They are very new and they can't speak on behalf of any more than a small minority of club men.
Now let's look at the disconnect here or the lack of it. Every admin to top county player is a club man or woman. The mechanism was there to stop Super 8 but the disconnect is that county men especially are disconnected from clubs. If the GPA got their shit together they could have told their members to stop it the same way as other motions. Everyone here has or had skin in the game with clubs and I find it disrespectful how many lads who end up going to county board meetings are being slated as dinosaurs and idiots after giving so much to the GAA, often a lot more than any young lad with zero thanks. That is the disconnect. Two new groups who fail to see that all of what annoys them now could have been stopped had they just remembered that they have a club that had a voice and that Twitter outrage after the fact isn't how the GAA works.
That was a bit ranty... | |

| Tony Hanahoe says scrap the National Leagues to create room for club competitions.
Yep let's get rid of the one competition that is competitive and brings together teams of equal standing where status is based purely on results. The one competition that gives players a predictable sequence of matches over a short period.
How disconnected is that?
I'm trying to ignore the fact that he's a Dub.

| The thing is, ask 10 different people for a solution and you'll get 10 different answers. The GPA wanted to go further and I feel the reason they didn't come out earlier against it is that while it's not what they want it is a move in that direction. Plenty different plans out there that could work. | |

| I see Tipperary had two games planned for Thurles, one in Football and one in Hurling. Football game postponed so not as to mess the pitch for the Hurlers. Hurling game goes ahead. How they get away with that kind of thing is crazy. But after our experience with them last year I'm not surprised.
Longford should get automatic home game for the rescheduled date next week.
