PostSubject: Re: New Competiton proposed from Kildare County Board   New Competiton proposed from Kildare County Board - Page 4 Icon_minitimeTue Aug 17, 2010 8:42 pm

Just a thought but might it have been better to maybe group the teams so that they played someone from outside their championship?

Maybe have had 2 grades upper and lower and let the teams decide which one they wanted to enter instead of playing teams that you'll prob end up playing again in the championship. That is probably the main reason most clubs didnt go for this.

Again makes the arguement for starting the league a month later in the year doesnt it!!

I think that if the draw for Rounds 3 & 4 of the Championship had been made and Clubs were told that they wouldn't be grouped with teams they would be meeting in the next two rounds of the Championship then there would have been a lot more entries.

Start the league a month later or split the table when everyone has played each other and have play offs for promotion/relegation.

Very good point about making the draw for the next 2 rounds of championship, clubs would know where they stood then. At moment no one knows who they're playing and when and have nothing to focus on.

people want to keep the cards close to the chest one would suspect, should just have open draw from accross the county, or maybe have north / south 3 game league, then north v south final?

You'd imagine most teams would be fairly familiar with each other without chosing not to enter a competition.

I mean, how many times have Larries and a certain Newbridge club (who will remain nameless for fear of upsetting the kids) played each other in the last year in finals ect.

They know each other inside out at this stage and most clubs do. Don't think thats the issue.

I think the County Board called a number of Clubs bluff on this one to be honest.

From the Nationalist:

AS All-Ireland fever grips Kildare ahead of their semi-final showdown with Down on Sunday, 29 August, the local club championships have gone into lockdown.

After a passionate debate at last Wednesday’s county board meeting (4 August), club delegates voted against playing a round of the club championships before the Down game.

“We have to be fair to 1,000 or so club footballers out there,” argued Moorefield’s Peter Whyte. “As preparation goes for a semi-final, there was the same preparation for the Louth game, the players were kept away from their clubs for weeks before that game and basically it was a disaster. Are we heading for the same disaster again by allowing this situation to arise?”

The Moorefield man was supported by St Laurence’s, the club that beat them in last year’s Senior Championship Final.

“There is no proof that wrapping players in cotton wool over the next four weeks and not letting them back to their clubs is any guarantee of success,” said the Larries club secretary Martin Heydon, who wanted a round of games to be played this weekend, 14 and 15 August.

That proposal was not supported by the county chairman Padraig Ashe.

“There are a number of injured players are the moment who would not be able to line out in the championship if it went ahead this weekend,” said Ashe, who also added that most clubs would want their county players for two weeks before a championship game.

“It would be most inappropriate of us not to give this bunch of lads (county players) the best opportunity of the success that is ahead of them. That is not being disingenuous to the other 1,000 or 1,500 players who are out there looking for football.

“As far as the county team are concerned, we all want to see them at Croke Park in full health to take on Down to give them the best opportunity to get to the All-Ireland final. That should be all our aims and all our ambitions.”

A round of club championship matches was played in Down last weekend (7, 8 August).

So you took it on yourself to judge the comments made by Peter Whyte and Larries to mean that they are self serving and that both clubs really just want to play in the Leinster championship????
Good man Fionn. Twist the comments to suit your arguement.

Sure no point playing the championship at all. Moorefield apparantly have it won and want to play in Leinster and we all think that anyway. Sure look at the hiding we gave Kevins, who'll stop us.........oh wait a sec New Competiton proposed from Kildare County Board - Page 4 Icon_rolleyes

20 clubs out of 42 entering these competitions I think speaks volumes about their worth.

just so ya know its 40 teams 16 senior 16 inter and 10 junior

disappointing that less than half the clubs in the county opted to play some competitive football in the wait before championship starts again.

How can you call these games 'competitive' as opposed to any other games teams organise in the wait for champ? It's basically a sequence of challenge matches against clubs in your own county.

They are as much use or possibly less use than challenge matches clubs will organise by themselves.

I hadn't commented on it up until now, but it's getting on my tits that a load of people are are criticising clubs for not entering. We have had one or two challenge matches each week against much tougher opposition than we would play in these so called 'competitive' games.

I have no problem with clubs entering it, fair play, it means they don't have to go to the trouble of organising their own games but not sure how you can criticise other teams for giving it a miss? It's a meaningless competition against clubs you will have already played once/twice this year and possibly again in the champ. Don't see the appeal myself if you can get good games elsewhere.

Someone suggested, the county board had called Moores/Larries bluff by organising this comp......... How?? They wanted the championship to be played, not this comp!! There will be teams all over Leinster who would like to play Moores/Larries in challenge matches, I can see why they wouldn't feel the need to enter this comp.

They would definitely have a chance, at the moment the only county starters they have is Flynn and at a push Sweeney.

Would def make semi finals w/o their county players.

oh calm down

its my opinion that it might have been a better competition for teams to play teams that they want to beat within their county for bragging rights or whatever than clubs from other counties in "challenge" games who they might never see again.

as soon as the word "challenge" is mentioned before match the effort given and the drive to win definitely goes down while an actual competition might not have this same problem. i'm sure anyone who has entered this competition has done so to win.

anyone else who feels this competition is beneath them..... let them off.

Just talking to a kilkenny lad today and they play an inter-county competition at this time of the year. With a number of clubs from carlow, kilkenny and tip joining in the competition.

Kilkenny haven't played 1 round of the championship yet and don't most years. They play a few leagues games during the summer and the inter-county competition. The 1st round of the champsionship will take place the week after the all-ireland and will be ran every week after that until the week before the leinster champsionship.

But echoing Sam1928 lets move on and focus on the All-Ireland!

I think the idea of a comp is a great idea but it should take a slightly different format to the championship should it not?
